the crucial c400 goes for about 244 on superbiz for a 128gb model

    I got a vertex 2 120gb on amazon for 199...

I keep hearing conflicting stories about OCZ vertex 2 SSDs.

Anyone have experience with them? Am I better off returning the OCZ and getting the c400?

not sure about the c400 series as its new. If they are like the c300 ssd, then dont bother because they are complete power hogs. Plus you cant really fully utilize it because you need sata 3.0 which the m11x doesnt have. I'd stick with the ocz drive.

i have a vertex 2 being RMA'd because of the stupid chips they used. but for the most part the read write speeds aren't so flash compared to corsair's Force series.

The corsair F160 (180GB) that I have has unbelievable performance after a few tweaks. I'd recommend it to anyone

If you already own the OCZ Vertex 2, stick with it. It isn't worth returning it.

The "conflicting" stories about OCZ are because of a recent customer relations fiasco. Long story short - they porked a bunch of customers in the rear, and were jerks about cleaning up the mess. So now, they are the new favorite bad guy on the block for everyone to bash for anything wrong in the world.

The Crucial C400 is a better drive, and a faster drive. But it isn't worth returning what you already have to get one, and it isn't worth paying the extra $50 when you don't have a SATA-3 capable system. Stick with the OCZ Vertex 2 that you already have. In all likelihood you will own it, love it, have great performance out of it, put it in your system, use it forever, and never have any problems with it.

Thanks. Yeh it seems like hating OCZ is the new fad in the SSD community. Yet they still sell more drives than most other competitors.

What drive would you recommend in the 120+gb 200$ range that offers performance

If you can wait then I would get the C400, but I haven't seen a solid ship date for these drives. All I heard was before the end of April...

If you cannot wait and you want a game like Shogun 2, Newegg has the Intel 510 + Shogun 2 ($40-50 game) for $290.

If you don't want to spend $290, I would just wait for the C400. I'd hate to buy a C300 now for ~$240 and have the C400 come out for the same price in 1-5 weeks.

You could also grab a ocz vertex 2 or a similar driver with the same sandforce driver as it will perform very much the same. If you dont want to spend the extra $100 in the intel 510, you could still get a x25-m. They are still excellent drives.

For $200, the drives to get are drives based off of the Sandforce SF-1200 controller (G.Skill Phoenix Pro, Corsair F120, Patriot Inferno, Mushkin Callisto Deluxe) or an Intel controller (Intel X25-M 120GB).

They will all perform like champs.

All indications from the current batch of next-gen SSDs that are out right now indicate that they are priced at a +$50 price premium per 120GB than current-gen Sandforce SF-1200 drives.

Given that you need SATA3 support for the small real-world performance gain that you'd get, the current bang-for-your-buck buy is going to be a current-gen Sandforce SF-1200 drive.
