Have you installed the Alienware Command Center yet? I seem to remember that took care of my last unknown device when I did my fresh install.

Well check device manager and go to properties of the unknown device. On the Details Tab see what the Hardware ID is.

COMPAL Embedded System Control... Has to do with the battery. My driver looks like it was installed via Windows. Driver date 6/22/2009 version 1.0.0.1. See if you have EMSC.sys in your Windows/System32/Drivers folder. thats the file that mine is using

Update: Did a little digging. Check to see if you have a folder C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\Filerepository\emsc.inf_AMD64_Neutral_..... That should be your driver if you dont have it I can host it on my dropbox for yah.

That last device will be the On Screen Display pack from the dell site.

Don't ask me why, I don't know. But I have reinstalled the OS twice now and that is always the last thing to get rid of that single unknown device.

I just reinstalled OS. It wasn't a big deal since all already downloaded files were in separate partition. I did what I did the first time and there is no unkown device this time. Thanks everyone.

It could just be a bad OS installation. I reinstalled, and everything seems well. Sorry I can't give you better resolution.

See if you have C:\Windows\System32\DriverStore\Filerepository\emsc.inf_AMD64_Neutral_.... folder. The driver should be in that folder. Use that to install.

or it wasnt installed during the OS install. You might just have to reinstall or search the Windows 7 CD for the driver.

Is the driver important? Or can I just leave it be?

I don't think it's a very important part. It seems to have a part with the battery from what I can tell. When I get home later I'll post a copy of the driver that I have to see If that resolves the issue.

That is the battery meter driver.

    Driver for that is here:
    http://go.mydellmini.com/?id=258X40...707-drivers-dell-inspiron-mini-9-910-a-2.html

Yeah, it's the free fall sensor to protect the hard drive. Basically, if it detects a free fall, it will park the head of the hard drive, to protect the hard drive from as much damage as possible from the impact.

so on your device manager, there is a battery icon right?

I know it might be a PITA, but you might want to reinstall everything over just incase. Like I said, the problem is gone after 2nd fresh install. Just make sure you download all drivers from dell, and go thru every single one of them one by one.

It is a ACPI device. You can try these drivers here and see if they work. Those are the ones I am using that came from Windows 7. They might be different since you are on a R1 but they are the same hardware IDs so it should work. Good Luck

    UPDATE!!

@idlehand - Worked like a charm! I screwed up the first attempt, but the second time worked perfect! Here is the device

Out of pure curiosity, why are you guys doing fresh OS installs? This laptop seems to come pretty much bloat-free and after having spent a few hours I was able to disable any non-Windows program loading up at startup or in task manager process tab...

Hi - I'm actually having the same issue with this unknown device with the same hardware ID. I did download your link, but unsure of what to do with it after extracting it. It is the file you mention with 4 files inside, but no setup or anything... I am probably missing some easy step, but is the next step after downloading the file?

My guess is to go to device manager, choose the unknown device, install driver by browsing to what you just extracted.
