    Yes and no.

The r1 has a gloss finish, the r2 has a soft touch rubbery finish.

If you have the whole LCD assembly, then its a straight swap over. If you have random parts from each one, then it may not work depending on what revision of the hinges you have in them.

Now, second thing, if you need to repair broken hinges, call dell. They will fix it one time out of warranty for free.

Dell is being a MAJOR PITA with the hinges. They actually sent out a tech, all great, and the woman spent about 30-40 minutes only to conclude that "umm...the defect is not in the hinge, but in the plastic piece connecting it". Riiight. Wrote them an email, nothing, will be calling their customer service yet again... ;[

and yeah, i've got a perfectly good R1 but you're right, gloss black vs matte.

Ejohnson, have you ever attempted the epoxy fix for the hinge?

Yes I have done the epoxy fix.

Its pretty easy. But I would call dell again, they know its not the hinges thats faulty, but the mounting for them.

I have both new and old right here in front of me.

The new hinges have more mounting points, and the lcd back cover has a larger metal base to bolt them to.

The old style had 3 screws on each side, they go into metal inserts that are connected with thin plastic.

But, if you wish to epoxy and be done with it (might be best to avoid any new problems)

I can give you step by step instructions.

I was 2 years out of warranty with my R1 and Dell still let me send in my lappytop to get the hinges fix free of charge.

Dell is a PITA to deal with, but you have to be persistent. You know what you're entitled to, don't just settle for the first response you get from them. Keep at it and make sure you're not forgotten.
