The games CVARs are located in 'variables.txt' in Documents/Starcraft folder.
    The following tweaks include:
The original goal was to improve performance without sacrificing quality.
Note: Default values are for ULTRA graphic settings in game.

foilagedensity (default 0.75) - this both a gpu/cpu feature. lowering this is benefit greatly but also image quality. (e.g. 0.25-0.15)

parallaxshadow (default 1) - gives a sense of "depth". turn this Off (e.g. 0)

particlelod (default 3) / particleobjects (default 1) / particleterran (1) - disabling/lowering these will reduce load on the cpu, beneficial for R1 users.

shadowmapsize (2048) - lower this to 1024/512/256 to improve performance.

TerrainTextureSize (1024) - amount of VRAM availible.

transparentshadows (1) - shadows cast through transparent objects. turn this to 0

    vsync (1) - change to 0

    watercaustics (1) - simulates pre-calculated waves/splashes in water. change to 0

waterreflection (1) - reflections on water change to 0

WaterRenderTargetSize (1024) - set to 512 or 256 to reduce gpu load.

The following are benchmark performance increase results on the follow system specs: C2D 2.6 GHz, 2GB of RAM, HD 4890 1GB

~8 AVG FPS INCREASE FROM ULTRA SETTINGS
    ~15 MIN FPS INCREASE " "

Note: This was tested using ULTRA settings. I would presume that MEDIUM OR HIGH would greater boost performance. As well as the M11xR2 model

On the battle.net forums, people found that shadowmapsize=1024, softshadowTaps=6 gives the most stable performance for a slight performance boost. Also, most people probably would not have ever noticed this, but lowering the shadowmapsize can cause shadows to appear jagged or pixelated when you zoom up.
