Does anyone have any knowledge of these ie. pros and cons against a standard HD and a SSD?

Dell UK are now offering a 500gb SSHD for the M11x (it's the seagate XP) but it cheaper than the standard 500 gb HD and obviously way cheaper than the SSD, it's confused me to be honest as most reports say they are only a fraction slower than a SSD but upto 40% faster than a standard HD so why the strange price point, whats the deal?

SSD prices are in the its now worth it range so you might as well get a SSD they perform much better.

Don't worry about a response - I've just found an article that basically states it's not that much better than a traditional Drive and that the only benefits comes from data that is accessed on a regular basis which is then copied onto the 4gb of flash memory but other than this it does not improve the performance at all, the price point still reads a little strange though as I thought it would be more than the tradtional drive.

Don't buy through Dell. Dell sells a Samsung 256GB drive for +$500.

The sweet spot is the 120GB range. You can easily find a drive like the Intel X-25M 120GB or the OCZ Vertex 2 120GB for around $220. 120GB drives are what to get for the best value on SSD's.

G.Skill Phoenix 120GB or Vertex 2 on sale @ newegg for under $200. Why would you ever buy a hard drive of any kind through Dell?

Lots of thread regarding hybrid drives already exist. Try a search to see more info.

If you want capacity, stick the the 500GB MomentusXT drive because you get the capacity you want with the added bonus of a faster boot time and faster common tasks in Windows.

If you don't mind having much less capacity, go with a SSD. They are screaming fast in everything you do.
