Hey guys, i currently have a 17.3" Asus G73JH as my main machine but I have been tossing up against weather or not i want an i7 M11x R2 for $800 delivered (brand new from Dell).

I do my gaming on this machine mainly but an extra laptop which is ALOT lighter and portable than this beast could come in handy. Help me decide? :/

Do you really see a NEED for having a portable laptop? If it is something you want for those few times you carry a laptop on the go, I would say that hardly justifies forking over $800. If you are someone who always needs there laptop on the go, then yes I would suggest getting a more portable solution.

Either way you haven't really suggested why exactly you need a more portable laptop (i.e. school, travel, work, etc.)

I'm currently on holiday in the United States so i'm actually quite excited because the price for an M11x back in Australia is like $1,500.

I brought this beast with me because i wanted potable gaming but i've found that it's simply TOO big and TOO bulky to actually use anywhere "on the go". I need a full proper table and space just to get this baby out and it NEEDS A/C power cos the battery only lasts about an hour, not to mention it weights more than a 2 year-old child.

When i get back to Australia i won't have a problem selling this laptop to make up the full cost of the M11x, i'm just wondering if it's worthwhile getting the R2 with the i7 as a general use lappy which is easy to use and handles most things with ease. I'll do a bit of gaming but nothing too demanding so hence why i'm happy to get the Nvidia 335M and save a few hundred $$$.

As sketched i would say yes, it would be an advantage to get an M11x, i have one and it is like a netnook BUT it certainly is more powerfull. FYI you can play most current games on high settings and that's nice. be aware though the screen is quite a bit smaller which can be a disadvantage (like when you play Black-ops multiplayer)

Q: can you still get an R2 from Dell? i would opt for a R3 cause it is much faster and power efficient, it will cost you more though...

R3 from Dell is $1,200 and the R2 is $800 (logicbuy has a $320 coupon code hence the price). Not rly worth the $400 tbh lol.

Just hoping the jump from a 17.3" to a 11.6" monitor isn't too much of a difference :/

I don't play games that are too graphically enhanced, i play stuff like Warcraft 3 / Counter STrike Source / Unreal tornament 3 / Left 4 Dead ect

Don't worry about the size of the screen, you get use to it really quickly.

The only thing that may take a bit of getting use to is the resolution change. If you have a 1080p display or similar on your Asus, you'll probably notice the loss of screen real estate in productive sort of programs. For gaming and general use, the res on the M11x if perfectly fine.

You can always plug it into a monitor if you need to and you're good to go ;)

tbh I haven't really heard anything bad about the m11x that would be a deal breaker. It's a great laptop that looks good to boot. Also for that price, you seriously can't go wrong considering the real sale value in australia.

Cheers guys i'm convinced, i just ordered it. Came to $845 delivered including tax so i'm pretty happy with that. Will see which of my laptops i prefer and then sell the other one when i get back to Australia... i can easily get $900-$1000 so at least the cost will be covered! :D

This is my litmus test for potential Alienware M11x owners:

Ask yourself what you want out of a laptop.

If the word "portable" isn't one of the first three words out of your mouth, then don't buy an Alienware M11x.

The Alienware M11x is a fantastic little machine. But it makes a lot of sacrifices to achieve portability. If portability isn't one of the most important factors in buying a laptop, then those tradeoffs for portability will not be worth it to you.
