sorry if this has been brought up before but

iv recently had my screen replaced thanks to the hinge split and when i mean recently i mean today, 2 weeks ago and the end of december.

the first time was for the hinge issue but the screen the techy bought had a huge gap between the glass panel (plastic) and the top of the out casing. so he told me he will replace my first screen to sort the hinge and will inform dell of the problem
so the second techy came out couple of weeks ago to sort it but still had a gap, so after moaning at dell/alienware and sending them a pic of the issue a techy was supposed to come out Tuesday but never did and randomly turned up today (2 days waiting in for nothing) so today he turned up and i told the issue im having and im not happy, after all my first screen had no gap at all, and he said iv never noticed this issue but i dont think you will get 1 thats like your first screen now thats really anoying me . but he told me he will inform dell of this problem

here are the pics i sent to dell of the second screen i had fitted. the screen installed today has a smaller gap but you can still see the clips of the plastic.

My question is has anyone else had the same issue as this and am i asking to much from dell since it is just a gap. but it dus seems to be a bad build quality as my first screen was perfect ..... apart from the hinge :p

    Thanks

    Jack

I had my LCD assembly replaced last Friday and it too has this same gap. Mine is maaaaybe just a little less than what you have pictured here, but without question, my first one didn't have any gap. Others who have had theirs replaced have been reporting this here for some time as well.

Another striking difference between my new LCD assembly and the original is that the hinges on this new one are much less tight. When the tech had removed the old one I was carefully inspecting it while he was attaching the new one. Attempting to hold the hinge in one and and swivel the lid took a surprising amount of effort.

I wonder if either of these are common traits with recent replacements. The gap does detract from the fit and trim aspect a bit, but for now I'm not terribly concerned with it unless it leads to dust as some have reported here.

EDIT: Dude, that is one dusty screen you have there!

o i forgot to mention that the screen dusnt sit flush then closed. also the back of the screen is made from a differnt type of plastic

sort of a matallic look to it with the gliteryness but it picks up fingerprints likes its a fingerprint reader. but when clean it does look nice

if onli it closed right and didnt have a friking gap in it

o well we will see what dell says when they ring to follow up

If it's not sitting flush then yes, you need to call support back and tell them to send another.

Do you have a stealth touch R2? Sounds like your new lid is a cosmic black that the R1's have as a finish choice. If that's the case then they sent the wrong part. They did that once for some parts they shipped me. The tech I had come out last week said that it's extremely common for Dell to send the wrong color parts. How they can manage to screw this up when they have your service tag and every single detail on the system they built for you is beyond me.

Hmmm... curious that your new replacement has a different cosmic black finish. That's not a good thing to hear about. Could you take pictured of it's finish as compared to other parts of the body?

Would you mind looking up the part number for the LCD assembly that was ordered this last time? Would like to see if perhaps this could be a different part number than others have reported.

I have seen the gap problem on a lot of m11's. Seems to be a build problem as mine has it too and the one before did as well. But the screen not flush needs to be replaced as I would not except that either.

Has anyone sealed that gap up yet?

I mentioned in another thread that I'm thinking of using black RTV sealant to seal off the gap. My worries are that dust electronically attracted to the screen may find its way through this gap. My r2 lives in a somewhat dusty environment.

Does anyone see any problems that may arise in sealing the gap like this?

I'd thought about it. Can't think of any downside to doing so. Might give that a try this weekend.

I know that THX5334 reported this gap on a replacement screen a few months back and IIRC he said it led to dust behind the screen and he had it replaced (again).

EDIT: Here's the gap on my newly replaced LCD assembly.

iv still got 32 days on warrenty left so i dont want to do anything to void it plus you know if they keep coming i might get a screen that works and has no gap and shuts properly

Wow, I feel bad the gap at the top of my screen is a lot tighter than the ones in some of the pictures here.

I got some low tack painters tape and some black RTV so I can seal mine up. I should not really worry about it because I think I'm going to be a hinge victim.

Just in the little bit of opening and closing I have done so far my left hinge is flexing enough when opening the lid that the left back corner of the lid and case nearly touch.
