Hey y'all, I was wondering what type of SSD can work with the m11x. I don't own one yet but I'm looking into buying a r2 if there are any good deals coming out this Friday or Monday.
Also, has anyone found any good deals on RAM if you were looking to buy 2 gigs from Dell and an upgrade off newegg or something?

I'm not sure about the SSD but I was like you trying to upgrade my RAM. I wonder what type of ram will work and which will not.

Any 2.5" should work just fine, as long as it's standard 2.5 inch form factor you're good. It won't fit the 3.5" or pci-e or any other type.

Just about any 2.5" sata ssd should work. The x25 is about as good as money can buy, because it'll take about all of your money to buy one. The OCZ vertex II is supposed to be very good.
If you want to approach ssd speeds and still have heug tracts of spinny disks then the seagate momentus xt is a popular choice.
Your memory is going to run at 800mhz, any more is candy but it won't improve performance.
If you're not running VMs there's really no reason to go over 4gb. -
Sandforce Controllers or Intel G2 are accepted as the best SSDs right now. Personally I'm using a Crucial SSD with the Indilinix Barefoot controller which is slightly slower than the ones I've previously listed.
There have also been some good reviews for Seagate's Hybird Momentus XT drive.

As for RAM - get the 4GB directly from Dell. You really need more than 2GB. And the memory installed in the Alienware M11x always comes in 2-stick configurations (2x1GB, 2x2GB, or 2x4GB). If you were to get 2GB, it would come as 2x1GB. You would be forced to buy a 2x2GB kit, and keep the 2x1GB kit lying around in case you ever need to send your laptop in to Dell for repairs / replacement.
If you do insist on buying your own memory, you will want to get 204-pin DDR3 SODIMMs. Any memory you buy will run at 800MHz max, so buying anything faster than 800Mhz would be a waste. -
I have a 256GB samsung SSD and its standard size works fine
