Someone deleted my post for no apparent reason, so I'll ask again.
My original question is would I notice a huge difference if I was to replace my POS comp for a M11x which would make it my main computer. Games I would like to play are Empire Total War, Shogun 2 Total War, Napoleon Total War, Dawn of War 2, and of course InsaniQuarium! The list could go on and on...
Specs of current comp... yes it sucks...
>Vista 32-bit
>ATI Radeon HD 3200 Graphics (I think this is integrated)
>AMD Phenom(tm) 8550 Triple-Core Processor
>3GB DDR2 RAM

The forums are messing up, again.
So condensing my old post....
With ThrottleStop and a bit of OCing, the m11xr2 i5 will be a faster, CPU wise, against your existing desktop. The GPU is significantly more powerful on the m11x. -
Thanks for the input everyone. -
Yep, Phenom triple core is still faster than OC'd 7300, and should barely match it in single thread performance.

I suggest reading the games benchmark thread. Start at the end of the thread, here:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/462632-m11xr1-r2-gaming-discussion-thread-149.html
Then flip over to the Supercharging the M11xR2 thread, here (skip to the last 10 pages or so):
http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/524257-how-supercharge-m11x-core-i5-i7-um-cpus.html
Compare the game results in these threads to your current game performance benchmarks on your old laptop and you will get the answer you seek.
I am not trying to be rude or anything... It is just as simple as comparing your current FPS to the ones in these threads so you could decide if the gains are worth it to you. You could also search the forum for the games you are interested in. You will find performance posts for them.
Good luck!

I have searched numerous times, and cannot find any numbers for a Total War game. Does anyone on this forum have experience with Empire Total War, or Napoleon Total War on the M11x? I need numbers to compare to my current system.

However, I would warn you, that the Alienware M11x is *NOT* a great machine to be used as a primary gaming machine. It is not even a good value bang-for-your-buck machine. If your top priority is to be able to run PC games well, then stop right there, because the Alienware M11x is likely not a great choice for you.
The value of the Alienware M11x is its portability. It can run a lot of currently released games at decent framerates on medium to medium-high settings, and some other games at low-medium settings on the native res of 1366x768. In terms of PC gaming, this isn't that great. However, in terms of an 11.6" portable laptop, that is amazing.
If you have a lifestyle that requires you to move around a lot, then the Alienware M11x would fit you well. However, if you don't really move around a lot, and live a lifestyle where a highly portable gaming laptop is so desirable that you are willing to make significant sacrifices in power / cost / connectivity, then I think you'd be happier with a more powerful laptop like the Alienware M15x. -

BUMP please. I want to see if anyone on here has experienced Empire Total War, or Napoleon Total War.

BUMP...Does anyone here have Empire Total War or Napoleon Total War with a M11x...?

I think there is a Total War running on m11x on youtube.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rxZ6T4aiAZMSecond video was using fraps probably. It would run even smoother without recording. -
I have seen those already, and would like to see if anyone else had other benchmarks. This game looks somewhat promising at 30ish FPS in a land battle for NTW at med settings and 8x AA as the guy in the first video explains. -
Have you considered just upgrading the video card in your current computer?

I just found this...
SimHQ Review - Alienware M11x Gaming Laptop
Empire: Total War - Then I tried another favorite, Empire: Total War. With highest settings I was getting frame rates in the 50s.
That came directly from the site, do you guys think that is legit? -
The review seems legit, and he was running on the SU4100. I think you will probably be fine with the M11x, but if you're so worried about performance, you might want to look at the Acer TimelineX 4820tg. For around the same price as the M11x, you get a real CPU (not a ULV) and an ATI 5650 gpu which is a solid step up from the GT335. The machine itself weighs about as much as the M11x but has a 14" Screen.
All in all, it sounds like you, moving from a desktop to a laptop, might be better better off with the power of the Acer. There is next to no cost in portability, but you lose the style of the m11x. The Alienware is made for those with solid gaming machines to hold down the fort at home, so to speak. Since you seem to be looking for a replacement for your desktop, you may want to look for something with a little more power than the m11x has to offer.
heres the TimelineX owners lounge:

I played Empire: Total War on my R1 with the 4100 Core 2 Duo. I uninstalled it for a time pending a hard drive upgrade, but I plan on reinstalling it. I thought it performed decently, kinda choppy but not ridiculously unplayable if you tweak the settings and overclock.
