I got a friend that's looking into getting a R3 and i was wanting to ask the R3 owners here about their experiences so far with fan noise while browsing the web, movies (netflix, bluray, etc) and gaming. Also temps during these actions.

    Thanks for any comments.

The R3 is dead silent when I am browsing the web watching some movies, but it gets really loud when i play games. ;)

    Temps
    Browsing Web - 40c - 42c
    Gaming Hardcore 63c - 68c

but with my cooler temps run at
    Browsing - 38c - 39c
    Gaming Hardcore - 55c - 60c

Yeah, there were other threads floating around about the fan. Gaming is the only time it cranks up loud (instantly - it's not like it even gets a chance to heat up). I haven't tried to adjust the fan speed using HWinfo32 yet, but supposedly that is possible in an older version of the software.

Any other task, the fan is almost silent, even streaming movies.

My system runs cool, and I don't ever game for more than an hour or 2, so I'm not worried about it overheating. My temps w/out a cooling pad when gaming haven't yet gone over 65c (I've not measured it much when not gaming/benchmarking, but it's around 45 - 50 when I've checked).

To echo what everyone else says, the fan really kicks in for gaming and it's pretty loud for all intents and purposes. Like i have to turn up the volume on my external speakers loud.

For just surfing the web though and doing non-intensive tasks, you don't even know it's there. It's very, VERY quiet. If you were blind and couldn't see the keyboard and fascia lit up like an xmas tree, you'd have to stick your ear next to the thing to even recognize it's on.

Since others have given actual internal temps, here's some external subjective observations: heat hasn't been an issue at all. Even during heavy gaming sessions the casing is only slightly warm to the touch all around with it warmer on the bottom left, and the air coming out of the fan vent on the back left of the isn't very warm. This is in direct contrast to my 15" Asus G51J-A1 which is just as loud and the air coming out of the vent on the side is very hot.

Gotta love the ULV CPU doing its work!

lol! Well I meant more than 1 or 2 hours at a time, in one stretch; usually that's all I have time for.

COD Black Ops, Civ 5, Fallout 3, and random demos have put my total hours around the same as yours :p

I haven't gamed off of the battery yet for more than a few min (to help someone troubleshoot an issue). As far as non-game use, the other day I forgot my charger and needed to work on a school project. I got a little over 6.30 hours, using MS SQL Management Studio running queries, browsing, emailing, watching a few vids, etc. I ran the battery down completely.

That was a good real-world test, and I was pleasantly surprised!

@romeodf27, yeah Black Ops is a lot of fun, but I love FPS games. The zombie bonus games are rad too!
