what's the fastest frequency that you could overclock your R2 without crashing?

By crashing, i mean like getting whatever on your screen stuck. not BSOD or anything. Its just stuck. In windows, in a game, stuck.

I was installing 3 things at the same time (through steam) and downloading EADM (for BFBC2) then when i was about to click yes to download on my browser, it crashed.

My assumption is when i use graphic intensive applications without proper ventilation, it gets too hot and will crash.

I have it on my pillow/and or on my lap. So im thinking its because the pillow covers the fan and the pillow and lap collects and conducts heat instead of distributing it, causes the crash.

Did anyone have this situation before?

What are your best and stable overclock frequency?

    Specs: i7(oc to 164mhz) -4GB-250GB HDD-

The fastest that I can OC is 162 and still be stable. At 166, I get up to the logon screen of Win 7 and then frozen. At 164, its pretty stable while playing Crysis (GPU Limited). But if I play L4D2 at high(CPU Intensive??), it will freeze at some point in the game. This happens when I have it on top of a cold granite counter top.

I think the m11x R2 maintains its heat pretty well with the case only being warm with a lot of hot air blowing out. But there is only so much heat that can be pumped out before the components get unstable.

I'm @ 164 while plugged into my LCD TV and notebook cooler. I then switch to 162 while on the go to keep things running smooth :)

BSOD every 20mins or so @166

the frozen logon screen @ 166 happens to me too. Well, its always the cpu intensive stuff that causes it to crash huh? I oc'd to 164, and 162, their fine until it crashes at some point. Are you comfortable playing at 162?

    Cant wait for SC2. lol

mine freezes on startup at 166.. so is 162 ok for gaming and what do you think would happen if we turn off turbo boost?

I hear that overclocking the cpu lowers the benchmark results so what is the point then? I tested this myself and it indeed lowered my score by a small margin.

Running at 162 seems fine so far. I wish my machine had M11Ash's i7 that can run at 166. Oh well, at least we can O.C to some level unlike the R1 which is all or nothing.

Yeah same here, SC2 is one of the main reasons to replace my old laptop and getting this rig.

162 should be fine. At 162, it should Turbo (1C2T) to 2592 MHz. I'm pretty sure the multiplier only flips to 17 if the BCLK is at 166, as nobody else with CPU-Z screenshots has had a multiplier of 17.

When you get BC2 downloaded, you know I'll totally be waiting :D

Mine's been stable at 166 since day one. Hours of Prime95, Fallout 3, Mass Effect 2.

I think most people are reporting 162 or 164. The difference is negligible. Be happy that you've got incremental steps as opposed to an all or nothing setting like the R1.

I can get her running at 164, 166 will BSOD on me.

Problem is (and i've seen MANY other posts like this) the system preformance is less with any CPU OC. I cannot even raise the CPU 5% without lowering my benchmarks.

Has anyone gotten a higher 3dmark06 score with the CPU OC vs. default?

I just rebuilt the system last night, still at work and havent given her a second try yet.

Try disabling turbo boost in the BIOS and running a few game benches as well as 3dmark. M11ash disabled turbo boost and doubled his fps!

Read the thread he just posted a minute ago. Not sure if he overclocked, but saw massive improvements in fps by disabling turbo boost!
