I found the info around of what type of memory & whatever to buy, but I was wondering if anyone had and tips or suggestions on somewhere that had some quality stuff at a discount or something.

Let me know if you know where I can find a sweet deal!

When buying RAM, quality matters the most.

The type of memory you want are DDR3-1066 or DDR3-1333 laptop SODIMMs. If you currently have 2GB, get either a 4GB kit (2x2GB sticks) or 8GB kit (2x4GB sticks). If you currently have 4GB, then you probably don't need any more than that.

Buy from any name-brand memory vendor. Don't get the generic cheap no-name or "house" brand memory. The names you should look for are Crucial, Corsair, Kingston, G.Skill, Mushkin, Patriot. They all make quality RAM that will most likely last you for as long as you own your laptop.

Places to buy? If you don't shop there already, NewEgg.com is the place to go.

so is it safe to say that 4gb would be fine? i just got my m11x and have 2gb, but want to upgrade to either 4gb or 8gb...

would there be any measurable difference in day to day tasks / light gaming / internet surfing with 8gb over 4gb?

i know 8gb is good if you do lots of photo / video editing, but is it worth $40-$50 to get 8gb over 4gb?

    What do yall think??

No. Save your money and go with 4gb. The only time you will notice any difference between 4gb and 8gb is with heavy video editing, things like that.

You will not notice any difference between 4GB vs 8GB with the things that you are doing.

There are two schools of thought for people in your situation:

    (1) Do not spend the $40-$50 to get 8GB of RAM, because you won't use it. Save that money, or spend it elsewhere on something that would give you a performance return for your investment.

    (2) Spend the $40-$50 to get 8GB of RAM. Since you are already upgrading your RAM, there is no cheaper time to buy it than now. And who knows? You may one day end up using that RAM.

It is up to you to decide which school of thought you are in, based on your personal cost sensitivity. Personally, I agree with Derfernerf, and am also in school (1)... save your money, stick with 4GB. But you would have to make your own dcision.

    Hope this helps.

Thanks for the link, ordered and should be here by Monday.

I have a separate, but related, question. I recently got the most basic M11x R1 you could get, planning on upgrading most of the hardware myself as I got the money.

I've recently installed Battlefield Bad Company 2, and have tweaked everything according to StevenX's optimization thread.

However, does anyone know the performance boost I should expect in BFBC2 by going from 2GB to 4GB? I know it won't raise my fps per se, but I am *hoping* for a decent average fps boost.

Thanks in advance for the help!

ram doesnt really boost fps, it can prevent stuttering. thats pretty much it. not enough ram will make your hard drive start to page and act as virtual ram witch isnt near as fast, and will stutter.

Exactly. And with BFBC2 taking up about 1.5GB alone, I think I'm seeing a pretty significant performance reduction since my HD is only 5400RPM (I think).

So like I said in my first post, it should raise my average (not maximum) fps right?

@bavman Yeah, I noticed that too. You get what you pay for, I guess! I've got 4GB in mine, so that's why I haven't bothered to upgrade yet. Maybe if I used more memory intensive applications such as the ones I have at work, I might upgrade. (But I don't really feel like working at home on the weekends lol)

I always assumed 8GB would kind of bottleneck on the SU processors.
