If I were to overclock my i5 to the max 166MHz, how do I calculate the CPU speed? Windows only seems to report the default 1.07GHz. If I divide that number by 133 and then multiply by 166, I get about 1.34GHz. Is that how fast my system would be when overclocked? How fast would it be once turbo boost kicks in? Lastly, does the memory that Alienware installs in their notebooks help with overclocking?

Download CPU-Z and it will display it.

I believe at 166MHz you are at 2,324MHz CPU speed.

Remember Turbo multipliers are different for single/dual core loads- for the Core i5, the single core multiplier is 14x, for 2.33Ghz, while for dual core loads, it is 12x, for 2Ghz.

The 1333mhz memory Alienware installs shouldn't matter when overclocking to 166mhz- it's going to run at 1000mhz CL6, something very likely to succeed.

Thanks for the answers guys! So it's a good thing that Alienware equips the M11x with 1333mhz memory as opposed to 800mhz that the mainboard is limited to?

And is 2GHz from the i5 um at all close to 2GHz from a standard i5 mobile processor?

Definitely appreciated, all this help is going to get my i5 humming when it arrives this week. Tech is a weird thing, I worked at Intel for a while and you'd see people hoard information.

"I did my homework... you do yours" kind of arrangment.

That's great for the karma. I teach martial arts now for a living, the past 10 years or so... and that'd be like me telling all the students "hey buddy, I researched this stuff, why don't you figure it out." Instead I try to help them, and they in turn try to help each other. Win-Win. Some people just don't get it, but around here I've run into farrr more helpful people than not and I think I'm going to really be pleased with the performance form this little notebook.

Yes, a 2Ghz i5 UM should be close to a standard voltage Core i5 2Ghz with similar cache, not counting memory/QPI speed differences.

If you haven't done so already, check out Throttlestop. It is a must have for people who overclock their R2's.

It is explained in this thread here---> http://forum.notebookreview.com/alienware-m11x/524257-how-supercharge-m11x-core-i5-i7-um-cpus.html
If you have any questions ask in that thread.

Wow, to think that this 'lil sucker's almost as fast as a standard i5 running at 2GHz is insane! I checked out the TS page, but the disclaimer scares me and I'd rather not fiddle around with it for now. I'm happy with the performance I'm currently getting. :)

Tekshow, I hope you enjoy your i5 as much as I do mine!
