Okay this will be my first gaming laptop ever and I am wondering how long its gonna last me? Will it be outdated soon and just a waste of money or what? I don't want to invest money in this and then it end up being old within like a year or so. Any info is greatly appreciated.

Even "desktop replacement" gaming laptops are already at least a year behind desktop rigs, nevermind an 11" portable released 6 months ago.

The m11x plays almost everything flawlessly up to 2009. It plays some 2010 titles quite well, others it struggles with dramatically. Don't expect miracles for games released a year from now though.

Hmm.. If you are worried about laptop being outdated, then you shouldn't even bother to buy a laptop. Due to fast technological advances, laptops are being outdated after a year or so: new processors, graphic cards, games and etc.

Alienware m11x is an ultraportable gaming laptop that can run even new games at medium at the moment. The cost of lower performance is higher battery life and weight.

I suggest you to take more time.

keeping in mind the class of this laptop, honestly I wouldnt worry about it being outdated...to a point. I mean I've been using my old pc with 8800 gts card for almost 4 years and dont feel like upgrading. I play medium graphics intensive games ie badcompany 2 and mw2
if you want it for gaming, and not for I CAN RUN LATEST GAMES AT MAX kind of thing its fine trust me.

if the hinge doesnt break i'll probably use my R2 for at least 3-4 years

if the hinge doesn't break, I'll probably use my R1 for at least that long.

No matter what it's a cool little machine, and it's handy to have something so small and powerful on hand.

To agree with what's been said, the only thing that will really get you longevity is a desktop. My desktop is two years old and blows this thing away. That being said, it still runs everything I play well enough that I have no complaints.

If you don't mind medium settings and comparatively low framerates on demanding games, then you'll be fine. I would say that has a few years of life in it, since games haven't been getting that much more demanding recently. (In my opinion, there won't be a big jump until the next gen of consoles appear). I could be wrong though. Even if its gaming ability isn't great in two years, you'll still have the coolest ultraportable there is.

Thank you for the replies guys and the thing with a desktop is that I will not be owning a gaming desktop. I am on the move too much and play in a lot of different areas. I go to college and will be in the library, dorm room, lounge places like that. That is why I was wondering if this would be good for me.

Alright, I'm also in college and carry it with me fairly often, granted I generally only game in my room. In that case, you probably don't want anything much heavier.

For comparison's sake, what kinds of games to you generally play and what kind of PC are you used gaming on in terms of specs?

For an ultraportable notebook that you can carry anywhere, surf the internet for hours without being hooked up to power, and play most games on medium to high settings, the M11X is awesome. There are plenty of notebooks that will get better gaming performance - but most of those are huge, weigh 20 pounds, and draw power like there is no tomorrow.

How does it serve as a laptop for school? I'm finishing up high school and its almost time to replace the laptop I've been using for school these past years.

The laptop I've been using is an 8 pound Dell, and I want something lighter, and smaller. I've been lusting after this thing since it was announced at CES, so if you guys can vouch for it's school suitability (I.E. Note taking, writing papers, web research) I'd be sold.

Also, this dell has been hell in a hand basket. Its been nothing but problems, are the Alienware laptops any different? I'm assuming so, since they're top of line, but $1500 for a dell business class laptop that was a P.O.S. would say otherwise....

    Thanks for the help guys!

I'm a 3rd year in University. Let me tell you this thing is AMAZING. I write a lot of papers, take notes in class while surfing the web, and play SC2 a lot.

It's great at multitasking without much lag even on power saving settings.
I even video editing with it as I'm an avid YouTuber who uploads videos.

I highly suggest it, plus you will look spiffy and stand out. :)

You can run Office on it, it weighs next to nothing, and will run 6 hours or more without power. Sounds like a school winner to me.

I just worked 6 hours in photoshop CS5 on a project and the m11x performed VERY well. No performance issues whatsoever even at 200 dpi which i was working in.
Honestly I love this laptop more than any other computer I've had in my life. You wont find anything more handy and useful. It's so light and small you'll find you have it on hand when you least expect to need it.

My friend has an M15x he lugs to class everyday and I just laugh. He actually put a dent in the top just by holding it up with one hand it was so heavy. That, and the battery dies in 2 hours, while I chug away for at least 4 hours or more.

haha. I know someone whose m15x has broken the bag he carries it in several times in several places because it's so heavy. I think it actively resists being portable.

Even if we can't run things as well, the trade off is worth it to me.

Get it. Got mine for a little under 1000$ and it's the perfect college laptop that can still play games.

Ok this may sound stupid but atleast im asking you guys for help and hoping not to be flamed. I know the r1 is a duo core, and the r2 is an i5 or i7. But what exactly is an i7 is it still duo processor or quad? Im just trying to figure this out because im about to put my order in now for my m11x.

The i7 is still a dual core processor. Only some of the higher end mobile i7's are quad. However, i5 and i7 both support hyper-threading, meaning that they support 4 threads despite only two physical core. C2D lacks this.
