I'v had my M11x since April 2010 and I still love the little machine. It works great, never had any major issues and most importantly no hinge problems! Anyway I finally decided to upgrade my RAM from the 4GB to 8GB. When I put in the new RAM and turned the laptop on, it started up, the keyboard lit up....but the screen stayed blank. I put the old RAM back in and it works. I tried that a couple times and got the same results. Has anyone heard of such things? any help is greatly appreciated.

    Just a few questions

    Which M11x do you own?

What's the frequency of the RAM you purchased? (i.e. 1333Mhz, 1600mhz..)

Did you try a power drain after installing the new ram? (remove ac adapter and battery, press and hold the power button for 30-45 seconds then reinsert battery and AC adapter and turn it on)

sounds like ram chips are faulty, just in case try carefully wiping the contacts on the chips and retry, but most likely ram chips are faulty. Try booting without any ram chips, I'd imagine result would be same.

Also, i am unsure at the moment but it should show amount of ram in boot message/bios (you can turn off stealth bootup in bios, which shows the text with things instead of alienware logo)

What brand/model of ram did you get?

I have had bad luck getting corsair to work on my m11x... works on my m14x though

Also are you moving from 2x2GB to 2x4GB right? Because the ram slot placement is a little funny on the M11x.

Yup, is that what you are trying? Or are you trying a single 8gb RAM module?
