Oh man I am not the one to ask but "I think" you have to hit one of the F keys to get the picture displayed on your hdtv/monitor. You could always just call Dell instead of waiting around in here. I had a crap laptop for a few days last month and it had a P (projector) button. Sorry.

Right click your desktop and go to your display settings, use the drop down and make the Samsung monitor your primary. If i remember correctly, this is what i had to do.

It has nothing to do with making the Samsung monitor your primary monitor. If you plugged your laptop into your HDTV over HDMI, and that worked perfectly, then you know the problem is not with your laptop or the HDMI cable.

There are two possibilities that I can think of:
    1) Make sure that you're setting the input of the Samsung monitor to the HDMI port. There should be some button or in-menu setting that allows you to switch between the various inputs of your monitor (VGA, DVI, HDMI, etc). Make sure that you've selected the proper input.

    2) Test the monitor with another HDMI source, like a cable television box, DVD/Blu-Ray player, another laptop, a computer, etc. It is possible that your monitor is somehow defective.

Do you have anything else that you can connect to your monitor besides HDMI, like a computer that uses VGA or DVI?

And if your monitor is defective, can't you just return it for a replacement?

Can you get your hands on an HDMI-to-DVI converter, and try using the monitor on DVI?

It's really tough to tell you what your problem us, until we can start figuring out what ISN'T the problem. And right now, we don't really know if the monitor ever survived the trip from Malaysia and is still working properly.

If you do need service, can you send the monitor in to Samsung and get warranty repairs?

There's a chance that the laptop is outputting a resolution or refresh rate that is not compatible with your monitor. Have you tried changing that?

I would expect a signal error if that were the case, but it's worth trying.

Nanabhai, I don't know if you have gotten resolution yet but I had the exact same problem and it turned out to be my monitor. I have a relatively new (2006) ViewSonic model number VX1935mw and it always reverts to analog mode when it gets powered down. Madness. When I connected my lovely new M11xR2 to a monitor that has a button on the side (brilliant!) to switch from analog to digital mode... MAGIC... I see picture.
