Portal vs Portal 2

I know this isn't exactly about the m11x (although I am getting one ), but I didn't see a dedicated sub-forum for actual video games, just cards etc...

so, im going to ask my future alienware brethren, im looking for a game to dl off steam to christen my new m11xr3, which game do you recommend i get: portal or portal 2???

i know portal is like $10 or something right now, but is it worth just picking up portal 2? does the original have online MP?

your opinion is appreciated

As for Portal 2, having played through the game myself 2 days ago, it's a drastic improvement over the first Portal. But that's not saying the first one was a bad game. Just, in comparison, the 2nd one actually feels like a full retail game. You could say that Portal was an "experiment"/prototype.

Portal 2 doesn't just add the multiplayer feature. The game also brings new mechanics, and a much more in-depth storyline. The singleplayer campaign by itself is well worth the purchase price. I would say everything about Portal 2 is improved over the first Portal, as it should be.

Edit: Also, the original Portal doesn't have multiplayer, and the campaign takes around 4 hours to complete. Portal 2's single player campaign takes roughly double that time, and that's not even including the coop campaign, which is another 4-5 hours.

On Steam right now, there's a Portal + Portal 2 combo for $55 USD.

Get Steam and the free Portal 1 copy like I did . Also, Portal 2 is like a rehash of Portal 1, they are both the same pretty much, but if you're looking for MP, then go with Portal 2. To me it looks like vaLVE throwing a rushed game out the window.

 

i wouldn't call it a rehash per-se because it introduces a lot of other elements into the puzzles like the gels.

So how does that work then? Once I get the m11x just make a steam account and then it is automatically downloaded or is there like a coupon in the box that I get to redeem?

 

yeah pretty much it's auto unlocked once you log into steam: no code to be entered. the free one that came with the m11x for me got activated even though i had it already

Dont play portal 2 without playing portal 1 first. It would drastically change the experience. Play portal 1, its dirt cheap, if you like it play portal 2 (if you like it you wont be able to help it).

 

I would highly recommend the orange box. It comes with Half life 2 and its 2 expansions, half life 2 death match, Team Fortress 2 (best multiplayer FPS ever) and portal all for 20 bucks! Half Life 2 and it's episodes is probably the best single player FPS ive ever played. It's really an amazing deal. Portal 2 is awesome but if i were you id play the orange box games and by the time you finish them portal 2 will be much cheaper.
