While playing Skyrim the GPU gets up to about 90, 91 degrees. When this happens it seems it down clocks itself (with about a 50% drop in performance). Is there anything that can help with this?
I have a R3 with Nvidia 540m.

1. How old is your R3, is it still under warranty if so get Dell to re-paste the HSF.
2. Cooling pad.
3. Re-paste HSF with IC or AS5.
4. Is the GPU over clocked, if so down clock it to stock to see if that helps.
5. When was the last time you cleaned your R3 with a blast of air cleaner?
Regards.

90 degrees is hot, but not in the overheating range. If it's out of warranty repaste, if it's not then get Dell to do it. Cooling pad may help too, or at least a disassemble and remove as much dust as you can.

90 IS very high even for an r3, make sure your vents aren't being blocked by anything. As an experiment I did that and my gpu temp shot uP 10 degrees C.

Blow compressed air into the back exhaust.

Ive had the same problem except I was playing Starcraft and mine got to 93C. I called Dell and they sent out a new cooling system. The technician came to my house to install it and I come to find out it's not just a coolIng system it's a whole motherboard. When he installs it we find out that it's dead. Also he 8th of RAM I ordered with it did not come. So right now I'm sitting here from my iPod with a broken m11x beside me. The mobo was a refurb from r2 and didn't have the same cable layout so right now I'm a little disappointed in Dell. He also took my old motherboard with him.

R3 to R2, no way should you accept that as a fix!
