Make sure that you don't have any unnecessary programmes running in the background, this includes the Alienware FX centre. I remember running the game reasonably well on medium settings whilst playing online but I did suffer from performance dips during some of the larger firefights.

Well for optimizations this is what I've done (improved all my games)

    -Replaced HDD with SSD
-Overclock CPU to 2Ghz (via pin mod and volt mod)
-Overclock GPU (my most stable setting so far is GPU clock-580MHz, Memory Clock 1470Mhz, Shader Clock-880Mhz...applied 9.5v GPU Bios Mod)
-Overclock Screen Refresh Rate to 80Mhz
    -Installed latest NVIDIA GPU driver
-Override some game settings with NVIDIA Control Panel Settings (Maximum Pre-Rendered Frames @4, Threaded Optimization @On, Triple Buffering @On, Vertical Sync @Adaptive)
    - For Some Games you may need to set Quality to Medium, AA Off ( Or use FXAA On in Nvidia Control Panel), Vertical Sync Off (Instead use the VS setting in NVDIA cp)

(Note if you will be oveclocking I strongly suggest adding additional ventillation/cooling)

Semi-reasonable is correct, the 1.7Ghz processor is too much of a bottle neck for the Battlefield series. I believe that pin modding it is your only real option.
