I had this issue on my previous R2, after searching for a while, it seemed to be simply a hardware problem.
Tech came to change the whole screen to solve it , and then the mic appeared as it should have in hardware components.
(btw at that time I also took the oportunity to benefit from the new hinges design)

So you'll probably have to call Dell Tech Support for that one.

The microphone is listed under the recording devices, but does not impact the sound.

what my issue was configuring it in windows 7... dunno what makes it work exactly, but like mess with the settings lol...

Unless the wire gone wonky, like on most laptops i ever had, screen cable lasts, but mic/webcam goes... but yeah tech would fix it under warranty.

Do you have microphone and Microphone Array listed?

I have both on mine and Microphone does nothing, but Microphone Array works and is the array built into the screen (the 2 holes either side of the webcam)

i never cared to check...? its a stereo MIC which i assumed and left it at it...

but its just realtec microphone. Dunno maybe OEM it comes with mic plus array, i installed OEM win7 x64 from MS website, installed realtec drivers and well it works beautifully.

Never had any issues with the mic on my R3. I would reinstall the latest realtek drivers. It may be having an issue with switching between the integrated mic and the mic input jack. I have seen that happen on other laptops before.

Found the problem. The mic was muted in Realtek software, but not in windows software :)
