    Hello all,

I have about month left on my M11X R2 warranty and am currently on the fence if I should take advantage of the Dell on-site hinge replacement. At the moment my existing hinge works fine, no creaking or squeaking. I've been very careful once I learned about the sensitivity of the hinges on these laptops but I'm just wondering if it's a matter of time before the hinge goes?

Here's my dilemma. I have a decent LCD. I have the Samsung panel and I'm worried if I get the new hinge I'll get stuck with one of the AU Optronics panels. I owned an R1 with the AU panel and was very disappointed in it compared to the Samsung panel and ended up returning the unit because of this. In comparison to the Samsung It looked washed out and not nearly as vibrant, almost looked liked an old interlaced monitor on solid white backgrounds.

    Question,

Is there any way to ensure that you get the same panel type during a hinge replacement or is just luck of the draw?

    Thanks!

There has been some discussion about this in the dedicated hinge thread up top (sticky).

I had mine replaced about 2 months ago and had an AUO screen. I now have a samsung screen. It seems that all of the replacement screens that I have seen from that thread have all been Samsung panels. If you are picky, then you should also look into how the lid color is slightly different...

Its also been mentioned that they will repair hinges out of warranty anyway. I am not sure if dell Canada does it differently than here in the USA though. Mine was out of warranty by 1 month and they came out to my office and swapped the panel.

Actually, there have been more AUO panels reported here in replacement LCD assemblies. So far I've had two AUO panels. The first was was fairly bright and and looked as good as it could given the mirror in front of it. The second one however (current) is significantly less bright. Essentially I went from mediocre to sub-standard. Mediocre display characteristics is about as good as you get with the M11x regardless of what panel you get.
