What have you all heard about the m11x model from Alienware? I'm wanting to purchase a laptop for my boyfriend, and since he's a gamer, I heard Alienware was the way to go. I know it's on sale for 90 bucks off this month, but I don't know too much about it other than it's supposed to be good for gamers.

    What do you know?

Deidre - m11x is small, portable gaming system at under 5 pounds. The m15x is larger, weighs more and in base specs around the same power as the m11x. The m17x is considered by most the fastest, most powerful notebook on the planet. It is heavy at over 10 pounds and is challenging to travel with. Each have their advantages and opportunities. For 8 or 900 bones, the m11x is not a bad choice. True they are planning to release refresh, but we dont know exactly how long away that will be... If you are considering the choice, it is OUTSTANDING! I play games, watch blu-rays, cause chaos at work with my m11x... I mean lets face it... The notebook is seriously suave.

Get one for your boyfriend, he will like it.. if not it's not the notebook.. probably means you need to upgrade the processor in your boyfriend. :)

As a portable notebook (no m17x is not really portable :p ) m11x is this moment, by far the best all-around notebook I have seen:
    • decent gaming performance: checked (in fact the best gaming sub-15" laptop)
    • acceptable temperatures: checked checked checked checked....
    • good battery life: checked
    • good looks (this is subjective): checked
    • backlit keyboard: checked
    • able to actually open it on the bus: checked
    • able to open it in economy class airplane: checked
    • pretty good (better than most in class) build: checked
    • great price: checked
    • amazing: checked
    • would I want my gf to buy it to me if I didn't have it? checked !

    Hope that helps! :D

I looooooooooooove my wee m11x! And your boyfriend will probably love you if you get him one.

I got the upgraded processor, 4 GB of RAM and a 7200 rpm hard drive for gaming, so the price came to about $1000. I play EverQuest II on my m11x and it does fine.

Also, I've taken a vacation with the computer and was impressed at how manageable it is on planes and trains. I flew Delta Air Lines from Detroit to Phoenix and was online the whole time with their internet service, tracking my flight, signing into EQ2 to chat, and just having fun. The m11x has a very impressive battery life.

I've had three Alienware laptops, and the m11x is by far the best of the three in terms of build quality and it is fun to own.

I have to completly agree with everyone who posted. The m11x is freaking sweet. My girlfriend bought me one on impulse and it's definatly one of the best gifts she has given me. I tend to game a lot away from home and the m11x is a traveling gamers wet dream. He'll love it!!! :D

Deidre, hard call. Not about selecting an M11x, that's a given, but just the timing.

As the much talked about upgrade of the M11x looms the best prices are probably now'ish.

However, if price and timing are not an issue, I'd wait for the upgraded model.

I'm very happy with my M11x. I've named mine "Tsar Bomba", best bang for your bucks :)

I am so very happy with mine. It does everything I need it to do and then some. I even bought an external Blu-Ray drive and now have it set up as my main system while I'm temporarily assigned with the USAF. :)

I love my M11x. It has become my primary laptop for everything, including gaming. I have an M17 and it is pretty much collecting dust, mostly because it is so large.

Now, I just need to find a girlfriend that buys their boyfriend M11x's....

Good God, have anyone gave any thought to the girl here? Don't buy it, he might love it more than he love you!

On a more serious note, perhaps you should try and find out what he thinks about M11x before coming to a decision, while some simply adore M11x, I have no doubts there are plenty who can't bear with the small screen/weak processor or some other cons of m11x.

Wow! Haha! Thanks for all the help! I wasn't expecting such a huge feedback! Thanks for the reassurance that the purchase isn't a bad decision; I'm pretty sure it's gonna be a go. I can't wait for the release of the newer version you all were talking about as his birthday is coming up fast.

    Thanks again!

I'm kinda glad I didn't let my g/f buy me my m11x, it was $860 bucks after shipping/taxes, and she moved across 3&1/2 states just for me. *sniff* ^_^

Now I get to spend money on my own credit card...wait, darn it! That's not good. Kidding aside, this little guy was totally worth it. I upgraded from an old single core Asus desktop from 2002.
