Hi my M11x R2 i7 edition start up time is rather slow and I want to speed it up. I do have the 7,200 RPM harddrive so it should be under a minute but its just over. I uploaded 2 screen shots, one of my services and one of my programs at start up. Could I get some insight on some services or programs I can disable?

Get Norton off there and put on Avast.

just un check the things that dont need to open on restart. getting rid of norton is not the solution.
Download CCleaner, there is a function that allows you to uncheck things from start up an shut down, without doing a msconfig.exe

    You can safely disable:

    Startup
    • Synaptics Pointing Device Driver
    • DW WLAN Card Wireless Network Tray Applet (use Windows built-in WiFi management instead)
    • FF_Protection Application
    • 3x Intel Common User Interface
    • NVIDIA Hotkey Service
    • IAStorIcon

    Services
    • Alienware Fusion
    • Norton360 (uninstall Norton entirely, and install Avast! antivirus instead)
    • SoftThinks Agent Service
    • Steam Client Service (manually run Steam when you want to use it. No need to auto-start it).
    • DW WLAN Tray Service
    • FF Install Filter Service

When all of that is done, defrag your hard drive.

I would not disable the NVIDIA Hotkey Service. Doing so can introduce instability with the NV driver. Google search for more info.

As for 360, he paid for it, might as well use it. FWIW, I use Norton internet security on all of my systems. No startup issues as a result. Norton gets a bad rap due to compatibility issues and startup problems with previous version. Since the 2010 versions, startup and idle time items/issues have been resolved.

Also suggest leaving synaptics alone. Intel Common Interface - not sure but most likely related to the Intel Display Driver. Might want to not muck with that also. Just a suggestion.

One thing to keep in mind, if this is a new system fresh out of the box, give it some time. Lots of activity is going on behind the scenes with a fresh OS install.

I do suggest disabling the 'Windows Search' service. This service is responsible for indexing the drive and can produce major drive activity, especially on a new OS install. Its pointless since most users know where common items are stored. Deep six this one...

Thank you all for you're very helpful responses. The only reason I use Norton is was BatBoy mentioned I paid for it so why not, but I see avast has a free version perhaps ill try that, although I've tried free AV's before like AVG and it was terrible, maybe this is different though.

    Great info.

Not to thread hijack but on my Startup list, there's 2 programs that I'm not sure what they are: WSED and Persistence. Can anyone tell me what they are for and if I disable these two on startup? Thanks.

best way to determine is to take the full .exe name and google :)

so, what I find is WSED is part of the Dell Wireless install and persistence.exe is part of the Intel Display driver. In other words, leave them alone unless you believe they are responsible for an issue/slow boot times/etc. Diag by temp disabling each (one at a time) and monitor for offending behavior.

Well that's because AVG stopped being good after 7.5. Once they released 8.0 it went down the tubes.
