I have seen several threads before saying it is viable to switch out the m11x stock HDD and replace it with the Momentus XT SSHD (link: http://www.seagate.com/www/en-us/products/laptops/laptop-hdd). I have had a 160gb hdd for the past 5months and decided that its too much hassle to constantly uninstall infrequent software or have them installed on an external drive. If I were to get the momentus would it just involve me switching them and reinstalling Win7 and all my software?

    -Thanks in advance

In short, yes. Should be a straight swap and install.

Just fresh install for safe measures. Less headache in long run for sure.

Looking for SSD's in 200 bucks range wouldn't be a bad idea neither, but it seems like you want the big storage space, and Momentus XT is pretty good in my experience.

Have read a few good reviews on the XT, and would get one myself but already have 500gig hard to justify the $$$ for a little extra speed on bootup etc.

Still they do say you will notice the difference.

Yeah, I await the day that SSDs have a large amount of storage. I have about 400gb worth of "crap" to install and I only have 160gb right now.

Maybe even consider the Seagate 750GB 7200RPM laptop drive if you want lots of storage and a decently quick drive. $110 @ newegg. And it IS 9.5mm so it should fit just fine in a standard laptop bay, including M11x.

    Newegg.com - Seagate Momentus ST9750420AS 750GB 7200 RPM 16MB Cache 2.5" SATA 3.0Gb/s Internal Notebook Hard Drive -Bare Drive

Also, I went from a Seagate Momentus 500GB 7200RPM laptop drive to the XT 500GB and there was a noticeable improvement. Considering I sold my regular momentus for $50, the 500GB XT only cost me about $60. At that price worth the investment.

Hmmmm... I will definitely look into it. =] Thanks for the information. Ill weigh the options and definitely get one of the two. Definitely considering that 750gb though!
