I own an M11x r2 with 4gb of RAM and I'd like to upgrade to 8gb. If I buy another 4gb stick ( Such as this one) would I just be able to install it, or do I have to buy a pair to install together? I know it's a nooby question but I've never done any manual upgrades before and I'd like to be sure before dropping $60.

more than likely you have 2 x 2Gb sticks. so you would need 2 x 4gb sticks to get 8Gb

you could easly check to see what you have. since you plan on adding the RAM anyway, just pop open the cover to be 100% sure.

    or look in the Bios.

FYI for 95% of ppl 8Gb of RAM is overkill, myself included. i just grabbed the 8GB set cuz it was only $10 over the 4Gb set i was thinking of getting.

I'm planning on getting it because I usually run at around 2gb used--even while just web browsing--and I can get close to the 4gb limit while running games, itunes, chrome, and other things.

Well I'm constantly running chrome, everything, launchy, MSE, tuneup utilities, and f.lux, as well as other background processes. Is that still more memory usage than is expected?

I'm on about 2gb too with steam, firefox, MSE, etc (86 processes) so I don't think that's unusual

I tried cutting down on the processes but seeing as I have an SSD and it has almost no impact on battery life it wasn't worth the hassle

I've been trawling these forums for a while now and finally got around to putting my order in for an M11x R3. Following the advice from various users, and also because I am comfortable opening laptops up, I went for the stock equipment except for choosing the Core i7 (with 2GB Nvidia GPU) and the better WLAN card. My reasons for only upgrading these are that I am unsure if the GPU can be upgraded if I went for the i5 then upgraded it to i7 myself, and that for £20 the WLAN card isn't that much of a stretch.

For the rest, the RAM is vastly overpriced from Dell, and I plan to get an 8GB G-skill set for the same price as the 4GB Dell offer, and 250GB 7200rpm drive isn't that bad and can be upgraded later on easily. I'm on an SSD in another laptop and though the speed is noticeably faster, the battery is a little worse, though I get the feeling that may be due to my usage pattern of constant access when listening to music making the drive constantly "on".
