I'm waiting for my ordered m11x r1 to arrive. I opted to get the base model and just upgrade through newegg. With regard to the ram, I was just wondering how the base 2gb in the ordered unit will be situated. Will it be a 1 2gb stick in one slot leaving another open? Or will it be 2 1gb sticks split over the two slots?

Obviously, I just want to know what sort of ram I will be needing to buy to get the machine up to 4 gigs-- 2 2gb sticks or 1 2gb stick?

Thanks, also any suggestions on good budget ram would be appreciated.

Im 99% sure that all the 2gb models ship with 2x1gb. Unless they run out of 1gb sticks thats probably what your gonna get, but you can wait till you get the laptop and decide were to do from there. I'd recommend getting a 2x2gb kit even if your does happen to come with just 1 stick of 2gb cause they might not play nice together if you buy another 2gb stick.

    Thanks,

What about a single 4 gig stick. I mean, I doubt I would ever upgrade to 8, but maybe in the future, for whatever reason, at least I would have the option to throw in another single 4gb stick.

Is there any drawback to a single stick?

Ideally you want two sticks so it will run in dual-channel. You can always add a 4GB stick and keep one of the 1GB sticks. Just make sure they match in speed and latency for better performance and stability.

So, a 4gb stick and one of the leftover 1 gb's?

Equal pairings in size don't matter as long as latency and speed correspond?

With the low price of memory, I'd stick with x2 2GB sticks or go for the x2 4GB sticks. Whichever you can afford. With 8GB you wont see any real improvement in performance unless you need the extra memory (which you will know already).

    In my 17x I have x1 2GB stick and x1 4GB stick. Do I notice a difference over 4GB - no, not really. My 11xR1 has x2 2GB sticks.

kosti gave you some good advice. Go with x2 4GB.
