Just purchased a new 11x and am set to receive it in a few days... I see that it comes equipped with McAfee. Just wondering if anyone has any experience with this and if its reliable? I have always used either a free virus protector or Bitdender. How does it compare to these?

Do you suggest I uninstall this and use something else? Is this the total protection suite or just the antivirus?...it doesn't say on the website?

McAfee sucks. Just use Windows security essentials. Its free, updated regularly, and works pretty well. Another good free one is Antivir.

^agree with both. Windows Security Essentials is a great choice. I use Avast myself, which is free, but also because of the ridiculously small amount of resources it uses:

Either use AVG or Avast 5 Free edition, use it with Malwarebytes and you have a low demanding kickass antivirus system

Eset Nod32 is also good. Not very demanding, nice and quite. The only downside is that you have to pay for it, and that it doesn't work with any other anti-virus.

I highly recommend you guys check out mrizos channel on youtube regarding AVs. Through his tests nothing could get past Kaspersky over a 7 day period, including items that are 0-day. He goes over every AV out there and subjects them to malicious content to give the user a view of if/how the AV hes currently using works..

Over a 7 day period of testing 0-day malicious content he wasnt able to get anything through, this is mostly due to the fact that you can block any application from running thats new to the system through Kaspersky. Again hes a tech who makes a business off of repairing systems / removing malware so his tests have to be limited, he cant subject the AVs he tests to thousands of links, most of them are dead and would be a waste of his time.

I was just gonna use it because it came free, but if it's that bad I'll just get AVG or something.

I use AVG on my netbook and it has been fine.

I use Avira AntiVir due to it's low memory foot print.
    It's a must on a Tosh Portege 3110CT 128MB RAM 'netbook'. :D

The thing that ticks me off is that Dell (New Zealand) is starting to 'include' 15 months McAfee into it's build (Alienware series included). And at USD49.00 you're paying for that!!! And then you uninstall it???

Now I can see a reasoning for Dell to do this as I can only guess at the amount of people who buy a Dell PC/Laptop and don't purchase security software and don't install an alternative.

15 days later after the security software trail expires people are probably ringing Dell saying there system doesn't work cause a virus has 'killed' it or their bank account has been emptied.

And with 15Months security software most of the standard Dell warranties would have expired and thus reduced Dells software 'problem' calls/obligation due to viruses.

Also in this world of viruses Dell is seen to be responsible.

But what happens if I want to take the red pill/tablet and I don't want to pay for 15months of McAfee????

You have a choice of anti-virus software and we've made it easy for you. You just have one choice. Now take your blue pill and enjoy it.

the first thing i did was take mcafee off and install windows security essentials.
I recommend everyone else do the same. AVG sucks now and ive tried a few other , MSE is the best IMO.
