So I am thinking of switching the use of my m11x from couch potato to network tester!

I got a nvidia shield, so that has moved into the m11x place while at home.

Now, I plan to run kali linux (new version of backtrack) and it seems like everything is already worked out in terms of things working. I was seaching around for a network adapter that allows monitor mode, and it seems that the bigfoot 1102 contains the atheros AR9382 chipset that I require.

So, now I need to download a iso, install it and start testing. This combined with my external antenna should give me super powers on networks.... now I just need to spend the next 6 months learning everything there is to know about linux and networks.... Im a hardware guy right now, so software and the inner workings of them is some sort of witchcraft to me.

So I finally got it installed, everything seems to be working pretty well.

I have yet to do much in the terms of network testing though... my work has a pretty harsh code on touching their network.
When I get home i will play around some more and see what fun things I can do.

Getting used the whole cmd code deal is tough, I have to look up pretty much everything I want to do.

I've been running Kali & BT before that on my m11 (r1) for quite some time, it will go monitor with the existing adapter :)

    have fun.

Its been fun sofar, lots of learning on this though.... I spend most of my computer time at work, they frown upon "testing" thier secure network, so I need to bring in some old routers and make my own private network to fool around with.

I was thinking of doing exactly this with my M11xR3. Does anyone have any idea how well Kali runs on those units compared the the R1s?

Best way I can think of to figure it out is to grab a spare hdd, swap it in then install kali.... if it works, great, if not, swap back your old drive and its like nothing even happened.

Try running it live until you are ready.. i wouldn't install fully until you are sure that is what you want to do.

If anything, I'd be installing it as a tertiary OS as my M11x already runs Fedora 20 and Windows 7 for productivity. I'd just deallocate some space from the Windows install and throw Kali onto that. I was mostly asking to see if anyone had any first hand experience with the R3.

    Cool, was just checking :)

Kali works well with the hardware, getting Nvidia working is straight forward, getting cuda working is not as fun but doable.

Honestly, I'd be fine eschewing the 540m for all my Linux installs as Nvidia's drivers are notoriously difficult to get to work properly, and doubly so for Optimus. I know that Kali might use the GPU for some of its tools, but Nvidia GPUs are an absolute off on Linux.
