When I move my M11xR1 while it's own, it would freeze after I hear this small screech like sound. Is this suppose to happen since it's such a small laptop or I should complain to Dell?

Sounds like free fall protection. When you say "move" do you mean slight movement or something else?

if it moves up and down. I think it happened once when my friend banged the table o_O
I take extra precaution when I set the laptop down if it was off the table

To if this was the issue, find the driver and uninstall it (It's not good for much. All I've seen it do is cause blue screens, which due to the frequency quickly become a much bigger threat to data integrity than actually dropping and breaking the drive.). If the problem persists there may be an actual problem with the drive.

I assume the accelerometer instantly shuts the laptop off. If it does that after some quick motions, go into your control panel and uninstall it.

Mine chirps. I thought I'd hurt it the first time, as in NEVER shake a baby.

It tried to leap to freedom this one time and ended up in the sumptuous expanse of the double weave subdued colour dominated by beige Axminster carpet. And there it lay, thinking about what it'd just done and nothing else.

Think it was in a state of shock as it wouldn't do anything.

Had to administer shock treatment by switching it's power off and on.. CLEAR!!!!

Ohhhhh baby are you better now??? Seems to be OK. :)

Now, even when I'm pretending to be Italian and talking with my hands while holding the M11x; it chirps but doesn't freeze.

Doesn't a Seagate 500GB 7200RPM HDD have a built in 'drop' censor anyway. So for those with said drive, you probably don't need to double up. Haven't checked any of what I've written above as I haven't had problems such that I needed to dig deeper.

One question, if you press down firmly on the Q or 1 key do you hear the screech????

If so it may be the fan rubbing on the base, otherwise I suspect it's simply the freefall protection as others have suggested.

    Priceless :D

Actually, there was some good discussion about that a while back. I think kent11662379 has some good info on the subject. Will have to revisit that...

Think is was only the ST9500420ASG model of the Seagate 500GB 7200.4 HDD that had a freefall censor and it wasn't well received due to conflicts with applications that implemented their own freefall censor.

My drive is the ST9500420AS with firmware D004SDM1

There was a 'problem' with 'clicking' sounds in Seagate drives with earlier firmware.

Check you have the latest drivers/firmware for the HDD concerned.

Or, buy an SSD, disable freefall app and problem solved.

With an SSD and no freefall censor, your notebook wont thank you as it'll remember it's last drop and be walking towards the light, before your yank it back to reality. But there shouldn't be anything to damage SSD wise. (Unless fish are swimming over to have a look at it)

With freefall enabled and a spindle based HDD at least you may be able to have the heads retract and save your platers. No guarantees though.
    Head crashes are just... nasty.

Better still, don't drop your notebook.

Reminds me of looking an an RA81 (cia 1986) failed disk pack via a viewing window where iron filings had clustered and asking the engineer if he thought we could recover that data on the disk. Engineer nearly wet himself laughing.

Always have a backup of your data.
