No external speakers connected. I'm getting random, intermittent crackling whenever any sound is played - I don't recall any changes made to the system that might have brought this on.

I notice that in Device Manager I've got Nvidia sound as well as Realtek, and wondered if that could have anything to do with it. I may have had a USB speaker connected some time ago, but didn't have any sizzles at the time.

Did it start recently? Does it happen with an external audio output device? (headphones, speakers)

I've plugged in a Logitech Z205 (USB) and will test it for a while.

The crackle-sizzle has been going on for a few months. My main machine is an R3, I just use the R1 for recording wildlife webcams - whose sound quality is almost always appalling, but the crackle-sizzle needs to be diagnosed and treated if poss :)

A USB headset will not help as the usb headset has a built in sound card. You need to plug something into the headphone jacks.

It stops when the Logitech speaker is the playback device

EDIT - sorry EJ, I didn't see your post there.

The Logitech USB is a clip-on external speaker. I do have a speaker that would use the headphone jack but it is otherwise engaged. I will test it asap and get back here.

    Thank you both :)

The sound is unblemished with speaker attached via headphone jack. If that means it's a hardware problem I don't think I can do anything about it.

Given that it's fine with USB or headphone speakers, should a wireless/bluetooth one be OK as well? My space situation is cramped to say the least, and the clip-on speaker doesn't fit the curved top of the R1 very well, it's insecure.

    :)

It is a hardware issue, a wireless one should work just fine as well.

    Thank you, Porras.

How depressing, despite the work-arounds :(
