I am having lock ups in wow and everquest, one every 30 minutes, it seems to be almost clockwork. The screen freezes you can alt tab out and browse the internet but cannot exit the game, going to task manager and forcing the game to shut down does nothing. Even shuttting down the computer through software will not work it simply hangs in the shutting down process, the only way to exit the program or shutdown the computer is by holding down the alienware button. This never happens with my single player games mass effect 2, fallout 3, batman arkham asylum and just cause 2, I play these games for hours without having this issue.

I am guessing there are few people with this problem since there are so few posts about it, my friend has an m11x as well and has the same problem but dell has never heard of it before. I have tried every intel and nvidia driver available but nothing corrects it. Since this is my main computer I am screwed with MMOs, anyone have any ideas how to fix this problem?

I'd refuse to play WoW too... :p

    Lol, j/k-

Last weekend, I played Everquest 2 for about 3 hours- started with WiFi with mouse in bluetooth mode, then moved into my office and plugged into ethernet, a 24in monitor over HDMI, Logi G15 keyboard and went usb with the Razor Orochi. I didn't notice any major issues. I played on mostly high settings with lighting effects, shadows, High textures, water, particles effects, etc. Though I didn't jump in on any raids, I'd probably have to turn some eye-candy down if/when I do as even grouping slowed things down a bit.

If anything the M11x got fairly warm so I was glad I had it on a cooling stand to help airflow to the bottom fan (you don't mention using one so could your problem be overheating?). Also, and I know this is a noob question, but did you make sure nothing was running in the background? Virus scans, indexing, etc.

Most importantly- Are you making sure it's switching to the Nvidia GPU? I'm not sure it WoW or EQ1 has to be "white listed"

Which M11X do you have? Are you Overclocking the cpu/gpu?

Hope this helps and Good luck!

I don't think it is a temp problem I am using a cooler pad and the highest temp is the gpu at 68c. I have almost everthing turned off in the background no virus scanning, indexing is disabled on my hard drive, it's definately running on the nvidia chip though because it runs 55 to 60 FPS. I am using an external display, 46 inch lcd through HDMI, I might unplug it and see if i get the lock ups just using the internal display. Thanks for the help.

    What drivers are you using.

    OC'ed? and GPU oc'ed? (overclocking)

whats your specs. particularly 4gb or 2gb of ram.

Right now I am using stock dell drivers 257.3, though I have tried every driver I could find or research. I have an m11x r2 I7, 4GB no gpu or cpu overclocking.

did you try the kopicha modded drivers? 266.44

And lastly when it freezes can you end its process. Or do you have to shutdown all the way.

Ignore the above. Ok so it is the optimus screwing with your ability to play. I find it that you need to find the correct settings to play. First try the lowest and work up. If it fails at the lowest settings increase them. I found that fallout 3 is best at high settings with shadows off. Anything higher or lower will crash. So yeah. there is that thread that Intangble just posted below me. It's a hit or miss till nvidia gets working drivers for this beast.

i have no issue with mmo on this little beast. I play Guild Wars, Global Agenda, WOW, FF14 for hours both OCed or not OCed and it does not hang up even once on me before. Only problem ever encounter is with FF14 when the game just game out as I would get random crash back to desktop and getting an error saying DirectX device not found. But I can just relaunch the game no problem. And they definitely last more than 30mins. But this problem is not the laptop but rather a known problem with the game itself.

I believe its the internal cooling of your laptop. eg. like heatsink not properly sitted or faulty GPU can be possible too. This is why according to your temperature logging it shows that it is sitting within threshold but due to bad cooling internally can also cause the hardware to act weirdly like crash, freeze and etcs.

You may want to get dell to come in and open up the system to check those components, or even to the worst scenario to get them replace the board.

There are a few WoW threads discussing this very problem. I had this in the past but no longer, no idea what fixed it but it seems to be a problem with the GPU and WoW

CPU at 164 (depends what you can get away with)
    GPU - no OCing
    NVIDIA drivers 260.99
    Bios A03
    Throttlestop

I should add I have not had any problems with LOTRO and DDO (other than in 1st week which resulted in new Motherboard)

Just an update on my situation, switching to Intel drivers 2266 and and kopicha modded drivers 266.44 seems to have fixed my problem with wow, 0 lockups in days. Everquest still has the same issue but I found that if I use the intel GPU I get 0 lockups in EQ as well. I also used driver sweeper before installing the drivers, when i tried other drivers to fix the problems I was having I did not use DS.

interesting, can anyone confirm that they get lockups WITH the modded drivers by kopicha? if no one gets lock ups with the modded, i wonder if thats a good control test

i wonder if it is a driver issue....

Can you post this in the now 14 page long other thread about this issue? We've been looking for solutions for ages now and we would welcome any that works.
