I received a working m11x r1 for free from a friend, bought a charger, and played around on it a little. But I want more power. From what I see, I can't upgrade the cpu in my r1 without extensive work, and even then its not an i3, i5,ect.

So my question is, can I buy the lower half of a r2 or r3, buy the motherboard for what bottom I buy, ect, and use the rest that was unchanged from my r1?

Or is there too much to really bother with and should just sell the r1 and buy a newer model?

search it out... lots of differences. If not your hobby to mod, then sell.

requires a new mobo > new processor > new ram > new chassis

Basically buy a whole new computer

Mobo/cpu/gpu will not fit without heavy modding, you're basically looking at purchasing an entire R2.

Didn't somebody try this and pretty much say that? Like some of the ports looked like they were in the same spot but weren't quite and there was much dremeling in the land. And so on.

    r1 has a vga port, r2/3 dont.

To make a r1 into a r2 you will need to replace the following parts

    Base
    Bottom cover
    palm rest
LCD housing (unless you dont mind having a gloss top half of the case and a soft touch bottom half)
    Motherboard with heatsink
    HDD mounts

Parts that are the same between r1/r2 - But not for the r3
    I/O board
    Power jack
    Ram
    HDD (not mounting cage)
    LCD
    wifi card
    Speakers

When trying to do the swap, you will also have to make sure you have the correct cables for the r2. Most of them will come on the new palm rest.

All in all it will cost you about the same as selling your r1 and buying a r3.
