I'm thinking of getting one of these beauties. But i dont know which to choose.
Primary use will be gaming - I have a work laptop for everything else.

I'd prefer the M11x but I'm concerned that its GFX chip isnt powerful enough. (The system I'm thinking of getting would be the i5, 4gb RAM version). Is this the case or does it play all current games with ease and my fears are unfounded?

they are two very different systems. the m15x weighs about as much as a normal 17" laptop and from my readings on this forum gets battery life like one; meaning significantly lower than the m11x. the benefit of the m15x is a better display and faster CPU and GPU. the m11x is without a doubt less powerful than the m15x but is still powerful granted its size and has much better battery life.

if you aren't going to be taking the laptop with you then go for the m15x. with my m11x i can play BioShock 2, Call of Duty World at War and F.E.A.R. 2 on maximum settings at 1680x1050 on an external display, well above the native 1366x768. so it looks like there is a little overhead for games coming out this year for playability on high settings.

the only game i have found that can't be run maxed out is crysis and crysis warhead, but i can play them above the native resolution on a mix of medium and high settings. but the crysis series seems to be an outlier compared to other games

Thanks for the reply, I'll be dragging this laptop in my luggage all over the UK / world along with my work laptop and a suitcase full of clothes for the week...so weight/size will be an issue (although I am a big chap, and do currently carry a 17 inch everywhere i go - this will replace that).

So long as It'l stomp through the majority of games in High modes now I'll be reasonably confident that it'l last a few years - which should be plenty. The one thing I dont want to have to do is upgrade every year!

I have both systems and they are night and day difference between them and you really need to decide if you want portable/battery life or performance/upgrade ability.

    m11x r2 i7
    3d marks: 7000/8000 NO OC/ OC
    Battery: 5.5hrs

    upgrades: RAM & HD

    m15x i7
    3dmarks: 13-14k Flashed GPU to 5870 speeds.
    Battery: 2.5-3 hrs 9 cell
upgrades: GPU, CPU, Ram, HD, Optical drive, Battery.

If you do not mind the weight almost double if not more you will get a more powerful system that will be more future proof but not as portable or small. I can not even notice my m11x on the go and i have not tried the m15x outdoors but putting it in a swissgear backup loaded up i can tell the weight of the laptop easily and running around all over town would be a pain in the as*

Given this, I would say to get the M15x.

Given this, I would say to get the M11x.

    Hmmm...
No wait, I forgot the problematic hinges in the M11x...
(Would they resist all the shaking and bad treatment during traveling???)

Since Dell/Alienware are playing mute, I would just get M15x...
    (or something else...)
