I read that once you get alienware m11x you should do a reinstall of windows 7 and over clock it and get an ssd/momentus xt. I always hear those are the three things to do for beginners.

my first question is, when i get alienware out of the box open it mess with it for a little and then i should just reinstall windows. I know there is a link and i cant find it. But does the Cd that you use to reinstall come with the alienware in the box? and do i just put it in and click reinstall?

secondly is there a reason to overclock. Should i try to just use the laptop and see how the performance is and then if i feel like i want to squeeze more out of it and make it faster i should overclock?

I don't know how much of a difference a fresh install would make as the M11x comes with very little bloatware to begin with. The disc that it ships with looks to be a restore disc which, when used, would restore the system back to the same state it was in when it was shipped to you. To perform a clean install, you'll need to obtain a Windows install disc, which Dell - nor most any other computer manufacturer nowadays - does not provide.

For me, games like SC2 and Source powered games ran much more smoothly after overclocking. If you have the time and money, you should see a nice boost in performance from upgrading the drive. I don't have as much free time as I used to, so all I've done to my system is overclock it and update the BIOS and videocard drivers.

the disc that comes in the box is just a windows disc with some alienware flair. no drivers or other alienware software. make sure to download the drivers you will need before have to make things easy.

OCing is up to the user and what you will be doing. also depends on what model your using. (R1/R2) from most of what ive read there is not much of a point in OCing a R2 unless you are using throttel stop. the R1 will show some benifits from Ocing in mostly only when gaming.

as far as the hard drive goes. there are more options other then the Xt that may be of intrest. i have the new WD Black 750gb and its much faster than most other 7200rpm laptop drives. with very low power consumption as well
