Call DELL and get it fixed. -
This could be due to not fully re-inserting the keyboard cable back into the receptacle. Have you ever removed the keyboard? Was this a refurbished model? If you find the connector is fully-seated, you might want to try simply restarting the computer. If that doesn't work, it could be that your keyboard is indeed faulty. New keyboards are easily installed, so it shouldn't be too much of a chore.
Hope that's helpful! -
im using the on-screen keyboard. Having it fixed isn't as easy as it sounds when you're outside the us. its an r2 and its not a refub, its still under warranty.
is there a software that i can use to check if its just the keyboard?
thank you for taking time to reply -
I doubt it could be the motherboard. In the past, if I had trouble with a ribbon cable connection, I would gently rub the male side with a pencil eraser to remove any corrosion. I would definitely try ordering a new keyboard first before trying anything else. If the new keyboard doesn't work then return it and look for problems with the female part of the connector, especially the hinged part that locks the connection. If that looks okay, you might want to try a clean install of the OS before resorting to MB replacement.
I understand that repair might not be an option for you due to location. In that case, get a mini USB keyboard to use as a temporary fix until you can get it repaired under warranty.
Also, and perhaps not much of a solution, look for a program from RandyRants that re-assigns keys. It'll help in the interim. -
@sumowondertoad: yes i also asked myself that question if its the motherboard, wouldnt it be affecting all the keys? . I really hope its just the keyboard.

Have you, by any chance, use the long screws inside the battery bay instead of the short screws when you were reassembling the laptop?
Using the long screws in the middle 2 holes inside the bay would go into the keyboard as they are not deep enough to fit them, damaging internal circuitry and probably forcing them up. The middle 2 holes reside directly under the g and h keys so putting 2 and 2 together, this is user error. -

is the r2 keyboard the same as the r1 keyboard ?

Holy thread revival! I haven't had a read of the thread so don't know whether this has been said but have you tried simply checking the KB cables and ribbons for an issues or cleaned under all the keys with a can of air for example?
-
hey man, ive got the same problem
with the b&n keys, also some of my directional arrows dont work. I have tried taking the ribbon out & cleaning it etc but its still not working... Its so annoying having to use the virtual keyboard while im out and i use it for word docs a lot and i cant anymore. Did u come up with a fix? im thinking i might just have to take it to a repairer around here, which is a real pain -
