Hello, I was wondering if the M11x would be a good laptop choice for college. I am going to be starting college in the fall and will be majoring in Computer Science. Would the M11x be suitable for programming in C/C++/Java? I am not sure if the ULV C2D processor will be powerful enough. Also, to anyone who owns an M11x, is the screen size too small? I've previously used 14" laptops in the past and would like to know your opinions.
I do not need this laptop right away; I can wait til about mid-July to August to buy it. If the current CPU isn't powerful enough I can wait to see if a refresh comes out before Fall.
Thanks,
po1son

It's more than powerful enough for programming C/C++/Java. Having used both my macbook's 13.3" and M9750's 17" displays going to the M11x's screen is no problem. It's a good size for portability so it's a pretty good choice for college use. If you can wait I would wait for the refresh though, if not to buy the refresh but because it'll knock the R1's price down

You can do C/C++ on a netbook if you really wanted to.I personally have no problems with it, and I'm usually running chem computation software for my classes. The screen size isn't bad but you you might want to consider picking up a display if the size bugs you. Like a few other people I'd wait for the update, there's a few minor quirks about the R1 that would drive you nuts (and a more powerful processor option too!)
And I highly recommend this PC just because of how portable it is, and the power that it is packing for its size, and battery life for the machine is pretty good too, if you lay off the graphics card (3 hours or so under heavy gaming isn't bad either!) -
I'll be commuting to college and I have a decent mid-range desktop that I use for gaming at home. I probably won't need to worry about an external display. Also, the refresh is now available on Dell Malaysia site (but it's expensive, starts around $1.1k for i3). Perhaps Dell US will be cheaper, who knows.

The US tends to have the lowest pricing out of all the countries, so its just a matter of time before the US pricing is known.

If you're not sure whether the CPU is powerful enough, then it probably is.
I'd take whichever will have longest battery life. I adapted to 11.6" screen just fine, from 13.3". -
theres the new m11x with a core i5 or i7 processor which should serve you nicely. :]

Just on the eee pc thing i've been using the 9" one for uni this year and it's fine for typing documents and stuff but the poor resolution has been getting to me all year, imo if you're using an IDE like Visual Studio it's just not big enough, i'm hoping to get an M11x for my uni work for the rest of my course

if you're just starting college, there is no way you're going to program anything too intensive for a netbook.
also, many universities allow for programming on their computers, so you can remote login to their server and use the universitie's powerful computers to compile and run your code. -
im going to st. lawrence university this fall...would a r1 or an r2 be better for college?
i'm thinking that an r1 would be better for the battery life...but optimus and i7/i5 are very appealing. -
Consider if you already have a desktop. If this is going to be your primary gaming machine and you need to eek out just a bit more performance, consider the refresh with an i7.
