Folks, it's that time of year again when consoles get loads of new holiday releases and we PC gamers get few. If your looking for a good distraction from Battlefield or Call of Duty, why not dust an old game off the shelf, install and have some fun over the holidays.

    My choice,

Neverwinter Nights 2. It takes a long while to install and update (usually almost an hour) once installed it takes you through a TRUE RPG experience. It doesnt require online play and therefore makes for some decent fun while waiting at the in-laws house or the airport or anywhere else.

I hope all of you have a safe and happy holiday season!

    Best Wishes, StevenX

Freespace 2: Best space fighter sim ever and tons of mods keep the engine looking beautiful even today. Also total conversions for Battlestar Galactica, Star Trek, Star Wars, etc. You can get it at GoG.com for $6.
    Freespace 2 - GOG.com
Freespace 2 Mods: FreeSpace 2 PC game - Mod DB

KOTOR 2: Obsidian's best game IMO, unfortunately they didn't get the time to finish it. Fear not Modders finished the job. I don't think it's available digitally but can still be purchased at Amazon.com for $15.
Amazon.com: Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic 2: The Sith Lords: Windows XP: Video Games
TSL Restoration Mod: TSL Restored Content Mod 1.5 Mod Download, Knights of the Old Republic 2 Mods

Freelancer - the best done space sim, IMO. Immersive story, well done controls (for a computer - space sim hardliners with joysticks may disagree). Sadly, another example the Classic Microsoft - seriously awesome projects, that get the axe before their full potential is ever utilized, but it is tantalizingly seen at every turn and corner. The master server list was taken offline, but there are community servers, with a primary comminutry server list still around :) The only flaw of this game compared to modern games is the horrid voice acting - though nothing as bad as Just Cause 2, I promise.

Recently found the original Empire Earth game completely covered in dust behind my old desktop table. Any real-time strategy fans should play this classic, definitely one of my favourite strategy games of all time.

I'm going to look up some Neverwint Nights 2 videos now, Steven. Is playing the first necessary?

Ha! I just recently fired up Mass Effect 1 on my M11x and am playing that between S.T.A.L.K.E.R.: Shadow of Chernobyl sessions.

I've also got Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic installed and have given it a go too.

For you RTS lovers, haha Sins of a Solar Empire (Trinity Pack) should work just fine on those machines, close to if not max'd out. Its a tiny bit more cpu intensive than gpu but it should be well matched to the M11x. Not a terribly old game either just threw it in there because it runs so well.

Sins of the solar empire is tough to start but very cool nonetheless. 3d space fights with strategy and some rpg as well.

Neverwinter Nights 2 does not require the first one to play. It's very fun, hours upon hours of play and a true RPG. Not like Dragons Age of Consoles.

    Best Wishes, StevenX

Codename: PANZERS phase one and PANZERS phase two.

It came in a cardboard box, so you know it's an oldie BUT a goodie. :D

It needed a Pentium III, DirectX and T&L capable GPU to play it ... wooooowww. :p

With some patches I got it onto my M11xR1 and it's way cool.
Max screen res is 1600x1200, but it still looks good on an IPS monitor or M11x screen with all GPU setting max'd out.

Good ye olde World War II strategy game with good visuals.

Dark Messiah of Might and Magic. Make sure it's patched.

Recently played through Doom 3 (even though it's not really that old).

Dark Messiah is one glitchy game. Especially when that girl comes in your life. I was playing it around a month ago and have forgotten the name already.

Deus Ex is my choice (first game, not Invisible War). Came out in 2000. Excellent game all around. If you haven't seen them, check out the trailers for for the upcoming Deus Ex: Human Revolution. Looks incredible.

Ever heard of Rage of Mages 2? Really old but awesome game. It is a lot more fun if you can find someone to play with since it was supposed to be an mmorpg in 1999.

Also one of the best games ever is diablo 2 lod. Theres so many mods to be found on the internet that make solo play really fun. Eastern sun is a really good one.

I never played freespace 2, but i had the original one and ive lost it now, but it was an amazing space flight sim.

I'm looking at this thread and haven't seen any oldie shooters (except perhaps Duex Ex) so here's one for the mix.

Delta Force: 2 and Delta Force: Land Warrior. I loved this series by Novalogic. It actually started me on my current patch as a gamer and major of computer science.

Seconded. Amazing game. Make sure you get the High Definition Texture Pack and New Vision environmental textures!

And since nobody's said it: Duke Nukem 3d. Hail to the king, baby.
    Alternate pick: System Shock 2

I found Delta Force: Black Hawk down and its expansion, Team Sabre. Fun arcade game, especially when you open up the console and do some magic.

Also playing Far Cry 1. Love the community mods and skins.

I know it's not that old (well 2005) but I am really loving BF2 on my M11x.

Online and in the right squad it is certainly fun. M11x eats it for breakfast and TBH it still looks pretty good.

Not into really old games, but I've started to play Oblivion and am wondering if it's worth my time getting Morrowind. I've heard excellent things about it and with the texture mods, I've read that it becomes even better so I think I'm going to get it from steam and get all of the mods for it that are recommended.

hahah, yeah. It ran very well for me even though I had to set pretty much everything to low. Still got 40+ frames from it. It's so sad because the console port is mind blowingly bad and I heard they changed the game a bit and added some new things.

These games are awesome. Difficult old-school difficult with thousands of skills, hundreds of hours of cut scene story driven missions, and tons of epic encounters in an insanely large world that spans 3 games and an expansion, with some of the most hardcore player versus player combat you can find.

If you're looking for a challenge, and are complaining that games are to easy now a days, try these games. They will test your mettle in hardmode and in pvp.

The other day I played Hexen. The last time I played it was in a store when it first came out, and computer part stores were far more commonplace than what they are now.

A couple weeks ago I was full on addicted to Diablo 2 on battle.net. I can't wait for 3. At the moment I'm attempting to get back into Knights of the Old Republic 2. I never finished the second but the first was one most enjoyable games I've ever played.
