I have a 1v BIOS ready but it's untested, there is no recovery method ready if something fails and it's not a significant gain being a .02v increase- some users won't see an increase.
I think there is a greater gain undervolting the GPU as xtravbx's GPU reaches 92C in games.

It was a private message. Seeing as he is the first volunteer, I'll have to take his findings. I give it the benefit of the doubt for now- we don't ambient temps or what speed his fan is running or if he has a bad application of thermal paste.

well i know dell does a crappy job with thermal paste. i think reapplying some arctic 5 would help the temp some.

i NEED to do this on my R1. yesterday i noticed after playing far cry2 that my gpu temp was 76C thats kinda high for an r1.

    Hit 96C running OCCT.

Been chatting w/ DavyGT about it, as posted above.

    Edit:

ambient temps are about 75F - air conditioned condo.

fan appeared to be running full bore during testing.

That's not good. Can you redo the thermal paste and see if there is any difference?

Not really. It just requires stripping the entire unit down.

I will redo it when I get my replacement.

This one is getting sent back in a few days.

They are giving me a new one for the webcam and the palm rest being loose.

Supposed to have it by end of week - we'll see.

If I get bored I'll redo the paste anyways.

If you have never had a laptop apart, I don't recommend it on your brand new R3 unfortunately - unless your temps are as bad as mine.

    One more quick update.

Running OCCT @ stock GPU settings still hits 95/96C

I had the same issue with my gpu on r3 and crysis 2. Tried arctic silver 5 multiple times. Then noticed that the heatsink on the GPU wasn't quite level so that it wasn't parallel to the surface of the die. I put a couple of o rings on the metal plate behind the circuit board that the heatsink screws into.. This effectively making the heatsink compress onto the die more when fully screwed in. This took my temps from 96 down to around 83-85 on stock clocks. (87 using 800/1050). What do people consider normal temps for the r3 gpu under full load?

    Nice find!
I wonder if R3 heatsinks will be the new hinge issue >.>

If there isn't already a guide, when I get my replacement - if it has bad temps like this, I'll make a step by step guide for disassembly / reassembly.

I did a few tests on my new R3 (with a 2617), and these are my results using FurMark 1.9.0:

65C - iLounge raiser (raises the rear of the M11x)
    64C - Zalman notebook cooler (ZM-NC1000) high
66C - Zalman notebook cooler low
69C - Zalman notebook cooler off
74C - Directly on the table

This was measured while the environment temperature was stable at 22.7C.
Is there a difference between FurMark and OCCT, if there is, should I test OCCT too?

    Hello everyone

At ambient temp of 25 C, my R3 GPU goes as high as 91 C in FurMark when sat on a flat desk and drops to ~86 when i raise the back. When gaming it's usually better - around 75 C in World of Tanks etc, but up to 90 in Crysis 2. I suppose a repasting and/or reseating of the heatsink is in order?

As you can see by looking at my temps, you can improve them a lot by reseating. If you repaste with AS5 you'll probably get even better results.

If you decide to reseat the heatsink, please take some high quality photo's of the motherboard (without the heatsink of course). I'd like to see what has changed "under the hood" since R1/R2.

There are already teardown videos on youtube. It's actually fairly easy to do.

You can use RivaTuner, or any overclock tool based on RivaTuner such as MSI Afterburner or EVGA Precision. These applications have an OSD function to display all kinds of stats while gaming.
