    Hey all,

My M11x R2 arrived today. It came with Windows Home Premium 64-bit but i have a copy of Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit and i was thinking about formatting the whole thing and then putting Ultimate on it.

I was just wondering is there any major issues with getting all the Alineware programs and all the required drivers again? Does it get messy or is it as straight forward as any other install of windows?

Would i see any benefit from doing this? Appreciate the feedback thanks!

just use the anytime upgrade in windows 7 you dont have to reinstall anything.. It will unlock all the ultimate features and you don't have to go through the hassle of reinstalling everything. . I did it with both my R1 and R3.. just enter the ultimate key when asked and your done..

On the same subject can you regress licenses?

I have Win7 Pro can I use the Home Premium key to 'downgrade' the license on another laptop to re-use the Pro on the M11x?

I have done it several times.. The question comes in for legality.. if you have an upgrade version then you are not supposed to.. but if you have full licenses then you are entitled to one lic per machine..

Thanks for the suggestion bigun. The idea of the reformat was to get a fresh start without all the additional stuff that Dell will ship with the laptop.

But the anytime upgrade is definately a good idea. Have you ever reformated one before? for driver installs etc??

    Thanks

Format and reinstall if you know how to. If you don't really know what you're doing, just leave it like that, and uninstall the programs that are useless.
I know how to format and reinstall the OS and drivers, but I chose not to. I just uninstalled the bloatware the first day my m11x arrived. My laptop is still running flawless.

One thing you could do is try uninstall the useless stuff that Dell put in the m11x and see how you like it, then proceed to format if you're not satisfied.

I wanted a fresh start so i re installed windows on my r1 it was kind of a pain finding and istalling drivers but to me it was worth it because its like starting from point blank and no extra bloatware

There is no bloatware on there its great!!

I did a fresh install on there and it was fine. Bit of a PITA to get all the right bits together and then get the custom alienware themes working etc but its more time consuming than difficult.

I'd say go for the upgrade within windows.
