    Hi Guys

I just wanted to check with you as I think this has been put to sleep but is it fair to say that the OC option in the M11XR1 is NOT guranteed to work, and thats why Dell removed it as a feature from their web site?

I'm asking coz everytime I OC my M11XR1 I get random restarts specifically when watching movies using VLC or when leaving it on overnight (I know its happened coz the Windows start up theme wakes me up in the middle of the night!)

Anyone else have this problem and do I just have to face the fact that I can't OC mine is does anyone have a cure that I have missed in one the of threads already posted?

    Some things to note
    1) I have the latest BIOS and am using only the Alienware drivers from Dells website
    2) I have not added any new hardware

    Thanks!!

Yeah, not all R1s can overclock, some can't even boot into windows without crashing. You could try swapping the position of the 2 sticks of ram and seeing if it helps.

You might of just gotten a bad motherboard and cpu. I'm not sure if you will be able to fix it. Maybe someone else will have an idea.

You might have just gotten a machine/components which cannot really handle an overclock. It doesn't mean that all machines of this type cannot be overclocked.

Dell states that the overclock is unlocked but they do not guarantee the stability/usability of the machine with it overclocked. In addition to it, your machine's mileage may vary with OC since the components are under a higher stress which they may/may not have been designed to work with.

Could be a bad chip but is no one else having this problem? I thought there were threads about this being a known problem?

I am using a German M11x and I am having no problems with the overclock. I have had it overclocked since it arrived and haven't experienced any crashing at all.

My R1 crashes randomly on OC as well. Non-OC is fine.

I guess I got lucky then as mine has been overclocked from the second day it arrived with zero issues. However, sometimes it won't wake from sleep, and a couple times I've woken up to finding that it's off. Of course, I might have just turned it off before I went to bed and not remembered.

Well it is a known problem. Some chips can't handle the overclock because not all chips are made the same. Some people can overclock with no problems while others the overclock is unstable. Sometimes it is a RAM issue and people have been able to fix it while others just got a bad chip.

How long have you left it with overclock on? I mean, OC with GTA 4 or BFBC2 on for 3-4hours? Will it still survive the CPU :p?

My has been running with the CPU OC'ed since I received it also, never had any crashing issues - had one BSOD due to the video card drivers but nothing due to the CPU.

Have also had the waking from sleep issue where it sometimes won't wake up - only other issue is buggy video card swapping - have to reboot multiple times to get the switching to work, in device manager always shows an error like insufficient resources.

Have OC'ed all day with MW2, BF2142, C&C3, Crysis, etc no issues at all - have had to fix my fan was rattling on the chassis so I pulled it apart and the fan (which just slides over the motor windings) motor windings had "slipped" down allowing the fan to rub the chassis - after pushing this back up it has been silent - and yes the fan is running :)
