Hi. I have a guy who wants to sell his m11x r1 to me for 425... I think its a bit much. Im thinking more in the lines of 350. Is that a good price? Or am I over doing it?

Another question. Is the laptop worth even getting anymore? I really like the styling to the laptop and in comparison to what I had and sold (1215n) I think it would be a great replacement to it. I would be using it mostly for school with some gaming on breaks or in the weekend.

I already have a gaming desktop so this wont be my main rig. Thanks everyone in advance

Depends - what CPU, HDD & RAM?

For an SU7300 + 320GB WD black + 4/8GB RAM anything from $400-450 is reasonable, it all depends on the condition and if it has all the original stuff.

Yes they are still worth it, especially considering what you get for the price. The R1's have the best battery life (8-10 hours) and are the only model with manual GPU switching and VGA output.

Just find out if it was warranty, and if the hinges have ever been replaced. the R1's and R2's have a design flaw in the hinge and makes it prone to breaking. Because it's their fault, Dell will repair it out of warranty but only ONCE so if it hasn't been done and it has no warranty it's good to know you're still entitled to a repair. Also note that when they repair the broken hinge they replace it with the revised hinge (they also replace the entire lid, it's all 1 assembly) so once it's been repaired it shouldn't break.

Yea it had 3 variations IIRC - the SU7300, the SU5400 and the absolute base model i believe was the SU4100. All are Core2Duo chips with similar clock rates (1.3GHz), but the SU7300 has virtualization and overclocks in the BIOS to 1.73GHz (not sure about the others though).

How do you like your m11x? Does it still run most games with an acceptable frame rate (30+)? Does it still run fast doing everything else?

I love my R3, it's a beast. I went with the best bang-for-buck option which was the i5 with base HDD & RAM, then chucked in the best SSD & 8GB kit aftermarket. It replaced the Asus G73 in my sig as my main machine even though i downgraded from a Quad-core i7 with hyperthreading and a 5870m with 17.3" screen.

My R1 i bought not so long ago for ~$450 after i fell in love with the M11x range. It runs games (i really only play CSS/Diablo 3/Warcraft 3/WoW) flawlessly and almost as well as my R3, in most cases on the same settings if not just slightly lower. I don't find the CPU to be a bottleneck at all, mine's pin-modded (hardware mod for higher overclock up to 1.9GHz) but i just run it at the stock clocks and never had any issues.

I mean sure you can see the difference in performance between them, but to be honest i think the major contributing factor is the Crucial M4 SSD in my R3 which just makes it that much faster VS a mechanical drive. Really i don't do anything on my laptops strenuous enough to make the difference between an SU7300 & i5 2467M all that noticeable.

I have owned all 3 M11x models and honestly the R1 is not much slower than the R2 at all. Literally the only differences between the two is the CPU (Core2Duo VS 1st gen i5/i7) and the lack of VGA output and manual switchable graphics on the R2. The RAM & GPU are the same in both, as do they both only have SATAII.

You can unplug your M11x in the morning and with internet browsing and light usage using only the integrated GPU, the battery should last you the entire day. It's perfect for carrying around with you almost wherever you go, and with an SSD & the fan not spinning (usually won't come on when using integrated GPU unless it gets too hot) it is dead silent when running.

You have to work out what you need it for. Don't need? Just want? That's ok too but might be harder to justify.

I would price a R1 at $350 if the hinges have not been fixed, $400 if they have been replaced by Dell already. I liked my R1 myself, for the price it is not too bad.

Funny you should ask, I just got one for $425. It arrived Friday :). For me, it was worth it, but it depends on what you need it to do. I wanted something more portable than my current M14x R2 (I love it but it's still heavy enough that I don't want to carry it around all day...my backpack is already heavy enough as it is) but stronger than my current old netbook. Battery life was a priority since I'd be using it away from home so the R1 was actually a better choice than the R3 after reading reviews. I didn't need it to play really intensive games, either, since I have the M14x for that.

I was OK with the price I paid since it was in good condition, had the SU7300, 4 GB of RAM, Windows 7 Ultimate, Office 2010, etc. If it had a lower grade processor or less RAM I wouldn't have paid quite as much.

$425 is very good, office 2010 and upgrading to ultimate can get expensive ;)

350 is about what I would give, evern though it has a ssd drive and the su7300. The reason that I would go for the lower price is that the battery has about 2 years of used up already and the average life of a battery is about 3 years.

Also you need to find out if the hinges have been repaired. And get proof by using the service tag number at alienware to find out. or get email copy of the repair bill. this is important!

Still love to use my M11xr1 every day it's a great little computer especially the keyboard. Used for work and home use and is a nice computer to use on a plane.

Screen was replaced 3 times for hinge problem.

Just because they have been out for almost 3 years doesn't mean they all are. Some R1's will be barely a year old, others may have new batteries (refurbs do).

I would say yes if it is in good shape and the hinges have been done already. You could get them down to $400 easy.

That's a good deal to me. If you want to check anything on that computer such as the warranty info, the specs or the manuals you can locate that here.

You guys made me bite the bullet and actually buy the thing. I Ended up paying 400 and it looks brand new and thanks to Alienware-L_Porras link to dell the laptop is only about 1 1/2 years old, not bad.

    Thank you sir!

I was looking into the vertex's, can anybody tell me which model to get for a 256gb SSD? There's so many choices I don't know which size to get.

    Samsung 830 / Crucial M4 > OCZ Vertex.

The majority of this forum swears by them. Between the two though, doesn't really matter which just your personal brand preference.

How about temps? I have seen a couple of threads on it but those are pretty old now and with more wear and tear it will become hotter. I was hitting 80c on the gpu. and cpu in the 70's c. Once I applied the new paste and cleaned out the fan the cpu gets at 62c and gpu 77c. Good?

Under full load while gaming, even 70 CPU & 80 GPU temps are withing "normal" operating temperatures. So yea, you're doing alright.
