Sorry for the all caps title, but when I switch to Discrete graphics (335m) and play some thing like CoD: WaW or Company Of Heroes, the M11X R1 gets so hot from the bottom, that you can't touch it without pain. I burnt my finger last night, my nerves feel numb. The fan sucks on this machine. I made another thread about increasing the fan speed, but heard that a custom/flashed Bios was in the makings. Any advice? I don't want to buy a cooling pad because I'm out of moneyzzzzz :( .

is it on a desk? Or on a fabric surface?

A cheap way to help with the cooling while it is on a hard, flat surface is to elevate the back with something small like a wallet or a small paperback book. Just don't block the fan vent. You shouldn't ever put it on a soft surface like a bed because it can't cool properly.

usually in my lap, it throttles (TOO MUCH HEAT so the GPU slows down) even on a desk. My left thigh has a huge red bruise/mark. You can't even put your finger on the laptop for even 2 seconds.

Your left leg is probably blocking the fan vent. When I use my M11x on my lap, I either put it under an old college book or position my laptop so my leg isn't blocking the bottom vent.

yeah, if I have to have it in my lap, I either have the laptop supported by my inner thighs (like, it's being crushed by my thighs :p) or hanging over my left side to allow for more airflow. On my desk, I use a small, square stick to bumb the back of the laptop up one centimeter to allow for more airflow :)

It makes no difference whatsoever putting the M11X on a hard surface, if I have my M11X on my lap, I put newspaper on my left legs thigh. Also it keeps the PC cool and I can read when the PC's doing a virus scan. But that doesn't fix my portable M11X R1 microwave.

Probably has something to do with incorrectly applied thermal paste

Try removing the GPU overclock, I'm surprised it hasn't set your leg on fire like you say.

I removed that OC a long time ago. I think the heat from that damaged the thermal paste.

call dell and have them replace your heatsink, then after that overlookl it and see if theres enough thermal paste, and if there isnt then buy some and apply a small bit

So joke buddy, only my location :D , I removed the bottom cover and put cooling pads there. Then I put cooling pads on the keyboard, and then put frozen peas on the fan alone. I thought I would get electrocuted. The I OC'ed using EVGA Precision, unfortunately I did not run 3Dmark06, which will give me a BSoD. I ran Crysis 1 on Ultra High settings. I got a 7 FPS boost. Not worth it. So I think that caused some harm to the MoBo so more heat for me. Now...to hide it from dell :mask:

haha thats why i wouldnt clock mine that high, if 3dmark06 wont run thats just to high, but dell wouldnt know. the techs that come and repair things are sub contracted.

You couldn't run 3DMark but could run Crysis? Without a single screenshot to back it up? Right. Not to mention the contradiction between what you're calling stable and you bsoding in 3DMark, I find the rest of your post hard to believe.

i believe his overclock might have worked, as long as the 3d clocks didnt activate and was clocked down to save power =p

Or he already crashed and pulled the sliders to the right while running in low power 3D clocks. Would show the very high "overclock" when it is in fact running at 405mhz and doesn't explain why he would have a 7fps gain in Crysis. Nothing adds up and that's before we even look at his hardware mods.

if you're gaming in your lap, chances are you are partially or fully blocking the air intake on the bottom (upper left part of this picture). try gaming on a table and let us know if it still gets excessively hot.

If it is enough to cause you pain, something is seriously wrong. Even my supposedly hotter-running R2 is never near my pain threshold level. I can physically feel that the bottom is slightly warmer or something, but never to the point of being worried.

    @DavyGt

thats what i was thinking, i had that happen once or twice when using a different OC'ing program. it would always drop to 405/800. id have to reboot to get it to reset.

i dont see how anything else could be wrong besides heatsink blockage (like dust buildup). if your fan is spinning, and the vent isnt blocked thats the only thing i can see happening. if infact your TIM is not working correctly the machine would shutdown long before your system could get hot enought to burn you.

if the system is getting that hot inside to make the bottom panel burning hot, the heat is not being removed and the heat is just passivly radiating off the heatsink. meaing the fan isnt on, the vent is blocked or there is no air passing thru the fins of the heatsink(clogged by dust).
