hey guys i talked to a few reps from dell and a friend that also talked to a rep or two and it seems there may be a new gpu upgrade coming. anyone have any info? im pretty sure it will be a nvidia gpu somthing along the lines of 96 cuda cores, fermi, maybe ddr5?,gf108? im hoping for the gf106 but i doubt it..

Maybe, maybe not.
Rumors have been going around, but this could be just the same as the rumored, "LG Screens" that would fix the hinge issue.
But time shall tell....
In any case though, if alienware should release a new M11x with a better GPU, I honestly won't mind. I am perfectly happy with my M11x R2. -
yea i dont blame you, im waiting for a gpu update before i trade mine in or sell it. i would love to see a fermi gpu and ddr5 in this little beast

yes Noah very good point!!!

nvidia 445mGT. Model was added to the latest beta driver for Nvidia.

aww fail.
I just got mine like a week ago XD -
well pizza u still have a powerful machine for its size either way you look at it and the m11x isnt the most expensive computer out there actually not even close lol
-
Yeah i totally want a minor performance upgrade in exchange for 2 hours less battery life
If they could cram more performance in without dropping below the 6+ hour life i get currently I would consider a purchase. -
I would any day prefer a proper cpu instead of that joke of an i7 over any new cpu.

I think they should have two series of m11x.. The m11x Gamer and the m11x Traveller. The Gamer has a hotter processor, video and less battery life, while the Traveller series still has some gaming prowess, ULV processor and 7 hours plus battery life. Alienware may be thinking that if someone wants more gaming power they will just buy a 15x or 17x but truth be told I like having a small form factor to lug around or sit in my lap.
Best wishes, StevenX -
Give me an M11X R3 with an i7 620M and an nvidia GT 445M with a better display and I will make the swap in the act...
I am not sure but with Optimus and all the other techs (Speedstep, TB, etc) this have, I dont think battery life would suffer a lot... I will settle with a 4:30/5 hour light use battery life... -

Corwinicre - Thanks for your response and I do see your point! I think It would be better if the R2 have a non-optimus performance gpu example (nvidia 445mGT - non optimus). The I7 is a little cpu power more but most gaming benchmarks, I am as High or Higher than most with R2's. Granted, I am a System/OS Engineer by trade, and I optimize a lot,,,but even comparing Vanilla R1 vs R2 the differences between the two are not large enough to call one Traveller or Gamer...
-
I agree with steven. While the R2 was an upgrade, it wasn't a true upgrade. I mean, the core i5 was basically the same as the SU7300, and the core i7 is only so much more powerful
Say Alienware had put a core i7 that clocked at least 2.0 GHz, then we would be talking about a real increase. While the battery would suffer horrifically, it would at least give the performance that quite a few people would love! -
..not saying it wouldn't be nice, just that I don't see it happening until a new line of processors comes out (or they come out with an m13x, since there are 13" laptops with Core I- M processors)
edit: Nope, I'm wrong. The next step up from the UM series is the LM series, which has a tdp of 25w and is in the 2ghz range. I wonder if the cooling system of the M11x could handle that increase. -
Like I was saying, the battery would suffer horrifically.
But now that you mention cooling...DANG IT.
I fear the days of the Alienware M11x series are numbered.
Then again, knowing alienware, they'll probably think of something up -
I7 UM: .725-1.4 v
I7 LM: .75-1.4 v
I7 M: .775-1.4 v
Given that the voltage range for the SU7300 is 1.050–1.150 V (i.e., has a higher lowest voltage) and that the R2 gets worse battery life in every situation, it would seem the UM processors featured in the R2 don't run at the lowest voltage even at idle, so the fact that they have a different lower voltage seems meaningless. (Well, given the difference in tdp, it stands to reason the LM and M get hotter, so there would be some battery life loss from the fan kicking on more often, but I don't think it would be too significant.)
Getting back to tdp, when I was looking up the voltage of the SU7300, I saw that its tdp is 10w, so going to the Core I UMs almost doubled the tdp already--and the LMs are 2.5 times the SU7300's tdp. Perhaps the C2D was way under what the M11x's cooling system can stand, making the comparison meaningless, but it's another way to look at the numbers. -
the i processors have the IGP bundled with it dont forget.

@Tass - Good point! Integrated IGP... ugh.. forgot about that. Still hope.. .I wont give up hope yet, dedicated GPU... dedicated GPU.... I7 true quad.. quad... quad...

just found something that looks interesting looks like the 445m is as powerful as the gts 360m
check it out! Notebookcheck: NVIDIA GeForce GT 445M -

That would be a huge upgrade over the current GPU but I'm guessing we won't see a R3 until SandyBridge deputs, word on the street says it should be fairly soon, Q1 2011.
Now SB CPU and the 445M would be sweet, but I'm just dreaming. -
