I bought the Asus external Slim Blu-ray Disc Combo. Model number SBC-06D1S-U from newegg. I connected it to the M11x and installed cyberlink PowerDVD 9.0. blu-ray doesn't play. I get error code =0024. I tried it on my Asus N81vp and blu ray plays. So my question is... does the M11x support blu ray? driver issue? I'm using the dell beta drivers.

Mazda - I have read you need to update the cyberlinkdvd 9 to play blu-ray. You have to do this right out of the box. The m11x is capable of playing blu-rays. Others have done it. If you get blu-ray working can I please BEG A FAVOR... If you have the same movie on Blu-ray that you also have a DVD can you take a screen shot to compare? Meaning 1 screen shot normal dvd and 1 blu-ray? I have an HDTV tuner it I belive it looks great on the m11x. I just want to see if the blu-ray is worth it... for the record I was looking at the exact same Asus...

    Best Wishes,

Ya there is a ridiculous patching process with Cyberlink that will allow you to finally playback blurays. I've found that with the stock Cyberlink Powerdvd 8.3 (non BD version) Some blurays work. However you do need to upgrade to the BD version and patch to its most recent version for newer titles to work. Iron Man wouldn't load at first. Watchmen, and Transformers 2.

I'm using Cyberlink PowerDVD 10 now anyway. :D

oh ya, all of this comment is based under the assumption it CAN playback Bluray :p

Bear in mind the update process is inside PowerDVD itself.

The first time you run, it says "Update Available, click here to install" - but you must have ignored that :D There is a way to trigger the update again from within the program - from memory, it's within the Activation section !

run the update more than once. sometimes there are multiple updates but it only updates you incrementally not all at once to the latest version.

well... there seems to be no way of capturing the blu ray screen. i've tried several programs and they all capture power DVD but the screen is blank. any ideas what's going on?

It probably has to do with the HDCP copyright protection and bluray anti piracy BS. long story short it just may not be possible to capture anything, (printScreen should work) or just take a photo of the laptop or video with an external camera).

Its my experience Print Screen captures anything your screen is displaying.

I'm pretty sure that it is caused by the use of Video Overlay, where pixels of a certain colour are replaced by video, but print screening only captures the replaced pixels, not the video (That's what I think it is anyway).

Mazda +1 rep for your sir bigtime! Can you describe performance? I am going to assume you are utilizing the hardware acceleration on powerdvd...

Again thanks so much! This thread should be pin'd at the top.

i don't monitor the performance at all. I don't notice any big performance differences while playing blu ray. blu ray plays like any DVD would. I guess it comes down to how fast your blu ray reading drive is.

i don't utilize the enhancements or anything. everything is stock settings. and just so everyone knows... alt+print screen doesn't work when capturing blu ray.

    That's hot. :D

Good choice of screen captures, faces and skin tones do identify the quality differences.

I've been looking around for Blu-ray players for some time and the ASUS SBC-06D1S-U looks very promising.

I've read that TotalMedia Theatre may still allows screen captures.

blu ray dics compared to dvd discs is such a huge difference. If you have 40+ inch hdtv then getting blu ray is incredibly worth it. If you are looking for a TV samsung makes the best LCD hdtv's and panasonic makes the best plasma tv's tho the older pioneer kuro's are still considered to be the best by some.

Is the m11x supposed to come with PowerDVD? I can't find it. The only CyberLink software I seem to have is YouCam.

    Yerp.

You get powerDVD 8 with the Alienware M11x. At least I did.

Oddly, just tonight I got a new powerDVD update.

    Alienware.3228U_TaRe43_DVD090827-01.exe

I just started the download and I'm off to bed (New Zealand) so can't say what's in the new 97MB update till tomorrow.

I found PowerDVD 8 within the start menu -> programs.
