    .... that's the question.

I just got my Intel Gen 2 160GB SSD back from being RMA'd, it took 4 glorious weeks. Anyway...

I've had the Seagate 500GB in there ever since and I have gotten used to it. Boot time is definitely longer, and installation of software takes longer, but the fact is that 500GB vs 160GB in such a small form factor is pretty damn good. To be honest, once all software is installed and i'm just booting and using the machine, while I notice a slight difference, it is far from sluggish with the 500GB hard disk in there.

My thoughts are that the user experience is the same because the M11x simply doesnt have the power to make the best use of an SSD. I felt there were pauses but they were not disk related and those pauses obviously still exist because the system is CPU bound.

There are benefits outside of random read write however, and thats performance during movement (ie no parking when moving the machine), and heat, and weight.

My dillema now is, should I sell the 160GB SSD while its still new in box in RMA form, or should I stick with the 500GB 7200RPM Seagate for convenience of storage? I do have a mobile 500gb external drive as well.....

Just want to gauge what people prefer and if others also feel that an SSD is futile in the M11x.

I'd keep the SSD, even though there'd be pauses due to other hardwares, pretty difficult to shrug off the fact it's way faster than the HDD in almost every way. Only reason why I never bothered getting one was due to the fact any decent sized SSD that I need and that I can find cost almost half the price of M11x itself

SSD = BEST UPGRADE EVAR!!!!! :)

Seriously - keep the SSD - put it in your M11x - and enjoy. I have the 500 GB HDD as well (which I replaced with my OCZ Agility SSD)...

SSD really makes the M11x scream... IMHO

If you can afford it? Always go with SSD unless you just need mass amounts of storage.

I would much rather have the huge amount of storage to tote around more games/movies/music. 160 gig is just too limiting for myself, regardless of how fast it is...

SSD definitely. Games just run smoother on SSDs.

Not that SSD's aren't amazing - but that is not really a true statement.

Depends on what you do with your notebook. Most likely the SSD will be a better way to spend the money.

Do you max out 4gb ram with your current notebook?

Unless you do serious multi tasking or RAM intensive things like AutoCAD or photoshop, 8GB RAM is a wasre of money sonce most people need more then 4gb. I suggest SSD, most people will benefit from the SSD.

@ nickbarbs, Keep the SSD, it can always be used as a boot drive in another laptop or desktop. ;)

i didn't have the money for an ssd. but the moment a good 512GB one appears for less than £300, i'll have it. and the hands of the person who was holding it.

and i'll run down the street laughing like a lunatic while simultaneously installing the SSD and running the windows set up.

just a quick update... this is not news but, putting the SSD back in was the right move.

I got used to the HDD but it's a night and day difference for the performance of the M11x in the areas of

-less heat and less fan activity
    -lighter
-continues loading and processing even while being moved around rough
    -faster for everything

    just

    -less space

but whatever. SSD all the way, its staying in :D

I really want to put my OCZ 120gb SSD in my m11x as I use it more than my clevo w870cu. But I have nearly filled my 500gb, I just dont know how I would cope with a mere 120gb (or 100 after W7 OS). I wish there was space to jam some more storage inside, you cant even use the SD card slot as extra storage as the card stick out so far :(

@ ninja2000 - I'd keep the 500GB for the M15x you have on order and use the SSD in the M11x since it will be on the move more and thus your information on the portible machine will be more secure during travel. Keep all the important stuff in the M15x. Besides, on the go you probably don't need more than a few games and movies.

Man, I really want to upgrade to SSD.

I have an 80GB Intel in another netbook, but can't live with 80gb on my M11x.

I had my heart set on the 160gb Intel like in the OP, but I really want to hear about the G3 models Intel are making which would make it a lot cheaper, or a chance to get a larger size.

    C'mon Intel, announce them already!

well right now I've got 8 games installed (all the latest ones, ie borderlands, just cause 2, gta vice city, team fortress 2, battlefield bc2, etc), a few days worth of MP3s, all my apps (full office suite browsers etc), 10 or so movies and i've got 50gb free.

Honestly I had filled up my 500GB hd but i wasnt even using 75% of the stuff it was just nice to have along.

The M11x will just have to be constantly updated like an iPhone or something with media that I'd like to bring along for whatever trip, etc.

totally true. but i'm more like an archivist - i'm always in a situation where i'll suddenly need the 75% of stuff i never really use :(

and i do kinda find it annoying when my laptop makes lightsaber noises when i move it about. dunno if it's anyone else...

HD will last longer and you get bigger space for smaller price.
But HD are more fragile / SSD

SSD is running damn faster cost much more and can handle shocks (i mean you can RUN with your lap in your bag no issue !) ...
SSD are to be change in /3/5 years...not HD

The choice is yours to do !

nickbarbs - with the 500GB HDD could you feel any heat through the palmrest and the vibrations, especially having gone from SSD to HDD and now back to SSD? Let me know your findiings and thoughts on that.

i say go for the ssd. even though i do not have one the people who do on this forum rave about them. also 8 gb of ram is also overkill for this generation of games and 4 gb is definitely sufficient.
