    Hi Guys!
I dont know if anyone has asked this yet, how do you get the sim card slot working on your M11X? I am in the UK and trying to use a 3 pay as you go mobile broadband SIM. Ive inserted the card and nothing happens, tried looking for it in device manager again nothing. Cant find anything in my list of connections either. Called Alienware tech support and they said they dont have anything on their database about the SIM card slot and how to set it up and to contact my SIM provider.

I found a driver that was prestore on the hard disk for DW WLAN card, tried installing that and it just crashed out.

Has anyone else got this working yet?

    thanks again

Did you have the Mobile Broadband Card installed as an option?I think the SIM card slot is on all systems regardless.

There should be a slot, there should be no WWAN card installed, and people say if you don't have the Gobi installed when you order, Dell does not put in an antenna.

just on the phone to tech support as i type this, you guys are right the sim card slot is redundant in uk. I was mis-sold this, the sale rep told me i would be able to use my sim card for pay as you go mobile broadband with this one!!! less than impressed about this. The idea of not having to use a wireless dongle was very appealing to me and was tbh a selling point of the machine. got to say though im very impressed with the machine so far, but i intend to have a good old moan to customer services about this!!!!
UK buyers beware! lol give you a redundant sim card slot!

Yeah its been pointed out in other threads that there is no card or antenna in UK. I have a dell 5530 card I plan to install but the lack of antennas is a real PITA. Guess I am gonna have to strip it down and install them myself

Yeah, it's a bit of a pity. I wish we could have at least ordered an antenna installed. Maybe it'll be possible to somehow get an external connector hooked in.

@Batboy: the sim card slot is located just above the media card reader.

I am currently on the warpath with Dell sales, specifically my rep who told me as a UK customer that i could use my sim card in the machine. Also Dell are advertising the mobile broadband as an upgrade option on their site (in tech specs) which in itself is a mirepresentation. I am waiting for the sales reps supervisor to call me back by 12:10 today. I am pretty annoyed tbh as it was a feature i was looking forward ot using everyday.

And also spoken to alienware tech support and they have said the components required to activate this feature are availaible to them for the UK its just for some odd reason that the Uk sales by phone and internet dont offer it as an upgrade.

I will let you know how this develops, i realise this has gone a little off topic but i feel personally that this issue is quite important to potential consumers.

I am just waiting for there to be a WWAN that supports Tmobile's 3G bands of 1700 and 2100. Until then I will happily tether my M11x straight to my phone.

I received mine (US customer), and ordered it with the AT&T service. Big problem though, is that the card is detected by Windows, but when launching the Dell Mobile Broadband Utility, the SIM card is not recognized. I'm wondering if they forgot to attach the sim card reader upto the GOBI card. On tech support hold right now. Grrrr.

Right just got a reply from Dell, They have refunded me£50 off the origional price (which they had already discounted by £60). this is because the salesman told me the sim card slot could be used.
They are also sending me a free TactX mouse because they hadnt informed me about an offer (seperate issue)
Overall im pleased witht the responce from Dell, they seem to have messed up with their information at sale, so im a little annoyed that one of the featuresi reallly wantd doest work but i think i can live without it.

    so there we go!

You might be able to get a card installed and use an external antenna, I would't give up hope just yet.

I install a Dell 5600 card which is the Gobi 2000, same card that m11x use. I got a mini antenna too. M11x will not recognize the card..
So, i guess Dell lock the function for non-mobile broadband buyers!

It won't recognise it? As in it doesn't show up in Windows at all?

    Tried looking in the BIOS?

I think that when it's advertised on the UK tech specs ( HERE - click Tech Spec tab), but then we find out it's not even available in the UK - there's a problem. Plus the fact that the UK setup is a fair bit more expensive than the US counterpart, I would have thought that this would have been included, not an optional extra.

I just ordered my m11x last week and as a Canadian customer I also had no option to have a antenna installed. However I'm very interested in installing one my self but I'm not knowledgeable enough in that area to proceed to strip down my new laptop and install something. If you do install an anttena please let me know how it goes and any pointers would be greatly appreiciated. Email me at mvollebregt AT me.com

    Hello RAQemUP...
For some reason, I cant get my phone to tether with the M11x. I have two other Laptops (both HP's) and they tether with no problem. The M11x does not recognize the tether...nothing happens.
Did you have to do something different to get it to work?
    Thanks

I'm also wondering this. Anyone know? If it can, can it be installed relatively easy?
