So I've had my M11x R2 for almost three years now. Lately I've been having some serious problems with it and I don't know what would be causing it.

Randomly when I'm surfing the web, listening to music or something, the screen will just turn to static (like on the old rabbit ear TVs.) I can't do anything except either click one of the mouse buttons, which either changes the pattern of the static or gives me a screen that has a solid color on it. It then shuts off. Sometimes the fan will run full speed before it shuts off.

I've also had the problem where I turn the computer on, the fan will run full speed and all the lights come on but I just get a black screen. I'll hold down the power button and then reboot it and it will come on like nothing happened.

These both have been happening for a little while now (intermittently), and today it gave me the static screen while I was browsing the web, so I turned it off, waited a little bit and then turned it back on, and then it did it again about a minute later after Windows had booted. I feel as if it is getting worse, and it makes it hard for me to use it because I'm afraid whether I'm playing a game or writing a document that I can't use it because it will just quit on me once in a while.

I asked one of my co-workers, and he said it's probably the GPU dying, and then in that case I'd have to replace the entire motherboard, right? Any help would be appreciated it. I've Googled this and done as much research as I could, but have gotten nowhere. It's really unfortunate too. I love this little thing and it's perfect to carry around. Thanks everyone. =)

I don't think the GPU would be doing that as the integrated Intel graphics chip could take over if the GeForce one were to fail. It kind of sounds like an electro-static problem or some sort of very strange problem with the screen's connection. I'm hoping all you'd have to do would be to eliminate the cause of the ESD or maybe go into the laptop and check the connections between the screen and the motherboard. I wouldn't imagine anything else really being able to cause that problem, even water or a short-circuit with the screen would basically just break it as opposed to being intermittent and static-y.

Good luck on getting your computer back to normal.

Have you run any antivirus programs? It could be a bad virus. It doesn't sound GPU related, I've had GPU problems and the screen just doesn't work or runs on iGPU; static is not a symptom of failing GPU that I've ever heard of. Try going to the earliest system recovery date you have (should not effect personal files)

    Have you checked the temperatures?

I would also recommend you to reinstall the video drivers by following this article.

Yesterday was a doozy. Turned the computer on and it just ran the fan for a couple seconds, lights came on and then it would shut off. After a few tries it finally turned on.

The temperatures seem to be within normal range. I'm gonna try to reformat it tonight and see if that fixes the problem. Thanks for all the help everyone, I'll let you know how it turns out.

After doing a system recovery to the original factory settings, it's still doing it, albeit less sporadically than before. It did it last night after trying to reinstall a bunch of my applications. I moved the laptop and then it gave me the static/flashing screen of colors. Then after using it for about an hour today it did again. It seems to happen more often when I move the laptop, even if it is just a few feet. Seems to me something might be loose.

Edit: just found out if I push down on the right side of the laptop next to the trackpad it will cause my computer to give me the static screen and flashing colors.

Well it's obviously not a software problem. You should try opening up the laptop to inspect the connections, I assume there's a loose cable somewhere.
