Just wondering what should I go with in my m11x. Was looking at either the 500gb momentus XT or the 256gb Crucial M4. Going to use this laptop as a mobile gaming unit.

    Depends on a few things.

Do you need speed, or lots of games/movies/music?

If you want windows to load faster, and games to boot up a bit faster, then go with the ssd. But if your like me and can wait a few extra seconds for the game to start just to be able to have 120k + mp3s, some movies, and all of my games get a standard hdd.

The momentus xt is a hybrid drive, so it has kinda the best of both worlds. Boots fast (after it learns your patterns) and still has some good storage.

When it comes to gaming performance (frame rates and image quality), the choice of storage disk technology doesn't matter. The only place where storage disk affects gaming is game load times and level load times.

Something like a Crucial M4 256GB Soid State Disk (SSD) is going to be like a Ferrari. It's mind-blowingly fast. But the drawbacks are going to be in price and limited storage capacity. The ideal buyer for an SSD is someone who demands only the absolute best performance from their computer hardware, and are willing to pay for that performance.

A Seagate Momentus XT 500GB is going to be more like a super-charged Toyota Camry. It's better than the "standard" model mechanical hard disk drive (HDD), which is more like a regular Toyota Camry. It is slightly more expensive than the "standard" model, but gives you a bit more performance for a bit more money, without sacrificing storage capabity. The ideal buyer for a hybrid drive like a Seagate Momentus XT 500GB is someone who wants performance, but are willing to settle for "pretty good" performance to save money.

If all you care about is pure gaming, then there is no reason to get an SSD. If you plan on doing other things with your laptop, or just want a computer that feels and behaves fast (and are willing to pay for that performance), then you might want to check out an SSD.

There are a few videos in my signature showing SSDs, that might be relevant to you.
