Key cap fell off

My key cover for my backspace key popped off with the entire retainer fully in tack and inside of it. It's an M11x and the backspace key's working without the key cap on it and also I can lay the key on top to hit it as well but I can't get it to attach to the metal clips. Can anyone help me?

From my experience, the retainer should be sitting on the keyboard. I don't think you can put it back when the retainer is sitting on the key. Once the retainer is properly inserted on the keyboard, the key itself should just click in place with a little push and a bit of up and down movement. It's not hard to do, but it is hard to explain. But from what I recall the retainer has to be already placed on the keyboard first. Just be careful not to break the little plastic clips on the key that hold the retainer to the key.

So to be sure, I should pry off the retainer from inside the key? You're probably right but it's really stuck on there, I suspect for sure I'll break the retainer if I attempt to pry it off.

 

The retainer is held with clips molded on the key itself. There should be a total of 4 clips at each corner of the key. You will need a small flat tool to pry the retainer off from these clips. You need to be careful with those. If one or more of those clips on the key break it will not sit flush. Again, this is hard to explain. Try searching Youtube for videos on how to do this.

 

Okay I understand.

 

So I did pry off the retainer and it stayed in tact except that once I using tweezers positioned it into where the key goes, after it was in place and I pressed the key cap back onto it, it doesn't stay, it instead gets stuck back inside the key cap and then I am back at square one.

 

Are the metal tabs on the keyboard intact (the tabs that secure the retainer to the keyboard)? They could be bent back to shape if needed, but if one or more are broken, the retainer won't stay. If it's getting too frustrating, you may want to look at getting a new keyboard.

 

The hooks aren't bent and I would never get a new keyboard over this one key, plus the key functions fine.
