Does Dell ship their machine with crapware? And I realize there was no optical drive after I placed the order, how do I do a clean install?

Don't know about clean install, but from what I have heard(don't actually own an M11x), they don't install crapware on the M11x.

There wasn't a ton of bloatware when my m11x came. I just checked to make sure OC worked, made a restore disk using Dell's recovery program, then uninstalled that program. Pretty much it; I didn't see a need to do a clean install.

Yeah actually I was pleasantly surprised when I got my M11X; there wasn't really anything to uninstall, except I replaced Adobe Reader with Foxit. All they put in it beyond Windows is stuff like that that will help--dell backup, alienfx (to control the lights), adobe reader, java, etc.

As for doing a clean install, here's a thread on how to get a legal copy of Windows 7 for a new install http://forum.notebookreview.com/mic...-7-download-links-just-like-vista-before.html. I planned to do it but didn't feel the need once I saw it wasn't full of crap.

All I needed to do was remove McAfee and Dell Backup.
You'll probably need to check the Dell support drivers and upload the latest Dell nVidia drivers as they're bespoke to the M11xR1.

Bloat? I vote no in this case at least compared to other systems. I generally dont use the AV companies install but its not bloat in my mind.

there is very little installed on the m11x, the only real bloatware was the Dell Online Back Up and the Alienware Face Recognition software.

actually you could either just uninstall the software that you dont use right off the bat

    or

    just clean install

i used to be scared to do a clean install as i always loved factory settings

but after i did some mistake with trying to restore factory and ended up in failure and the image was gone

i had to just clean re install, but it is indeed wasn't as bad as i thought, and with already having all the AlienFX installed and all the driver etc, i saved up almost around 3 gigs more from the original setting with the same software

(things like face recognition is useless imo, unless you're just using it for fun security )

not much crap at all, but I like to do clean installs some reason.. but it's easy enough to just uninstall the few stuff

I recently got an SSD and had to do a clean install. I miss the Alienware wallpapers and icons that the laptop originally shipped with. Anyone know where I can get those?

Is it possible to do a clean install without using an external dvd drive?
